The AllMusic reviewer criticised the conservative choice of material, writing that "Some of Hicks' '90s albums placed too much emphasis on overdone warhorses, and that is true of Beyond Expectations". [2] The Penguin Guide to Jazz observed: "By this point in his career, Hicks records come with all sorts of expectations attached [...] and this one confounds none of them, an utterly professional performance from a seasoned performer." Marvin "Smitty" Smith is an American jazz drummer and composer.
Ray Drummond is an American jazz bassist and teacher. He also has an MBA from Stanford University, hence his linkage to the Stanford Jazz Workshop. He can be heard on hundreds of albums and co-leads The Drummonds with Renee Rosnes and Billy Drummond.
