Bill Nguyen (born 1971) is a Vietnamese-American technology entrepreneur.

Life

Nguyen grew up in Houston, the son of Vietnamese immigrants. He attended Strake Jesuit College Preparatory [1] , graduating in 1991, then attended Houston Baptist University. [2]

Nguyen headed business development and product management at the ForeFront Group, which was founded in 1992 and had their initial public offering in 1995. He served as vice president of products of FreeLoader which was founded in 1995 and sold in 1996. [3] [4]

Nguyen founded Onebox.com in 1999. It was acquired for $850 million in 1999 by Phone.com (later part of Openwave). [2] He sold his stake quickly and started SEVEN Networks, a wireless e-mail firm that claimed 1.4 billion accounts. Nguyen founded Seven Networks in May 2000 and served as its co-chief executive officer until April 2005. In 2002, Nguyen was named to the MIT Technology Review TR100 as one of the top 100 innovators in the world under the age of 35. [5]

Nguyen then co-founded La La Media Inc. in 2005 in Palo Alto, California. In 2006 Newsweek and Wired described the company as a mix of MySpace, Netflix, Napster and iTunes. [6] [7] The company bought and sold compact discs. [2] [8] Eventually, La La developed one of the first, free streaming music services. On December 5, 2009, Lala.com was acquired by Apple Inc. for $80 million. [9] Apple announced that lala.com service was shut down on May 31, 2010. He was on the World Economic Forum's Young Global Leaders list in 2010. [10]

Nguyen was a co-founder of Color labs, Inc. in 2010 and served as its chief executive officer, but had been away from day-to-day operations since July 2012. [11] Apple acquired Color labs for their engineering team and the Color service was closed in 2013.

iPod Discontinued line of portable media players by Apple

The iPod is a discontinued series of portable media players and multi-purpose mobile devices designed and marketed by Apple Inc. The first version was released on October 23, 2001, about 8+12 months after the Macintosh version of iTunes was released. Apple sold an estimated 450 million iPod products as of 2022. Apple discontinued the iPod product line on May 10, 2022. At 20 years, the iPod brand is the oldest to be discontinued by Apple.

iTunes Store Digital media store

The iTunes Store is a digital media store operated by Apple Inc. It opened on April 28, 2003, as a result of Steve Jobs' push to open a digital marketplace for music. As of April 2020, iTunes offers 60 million songs, 2.2 million apps, 25,000 TV shows, and 65,000 films. When it opened, it was the only legal digital catalog of music to offer songs from all five major record labels.

Lala was an online music store created by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Bill Nguyen. The service allowed members to legally create online shareable "playlists" of their own uploaded music which could play full length songs for other registered Lala members, purchase MP3s, stream music on a one-time basis or as inexpensively purchased "web songs," buy new CDs from the Lala store, leave blurbs on other members' pages, and participate in the community forums. Lala contracted with major labels and offered a large catalog of albums to stream or purchase. Their home page claimed over 8 million licensed songs available.

Shazam (application) Music identifying application

Shazam is an application that can identify music, movies, advertising, and television shows, based on a short sample played and using the microphone on the device. It was created by London-based Shazam Entertainment, and has been owned by Apple Inc. since 2018. The software is available for Android, macOS, iOS, Wear OS, watchOS and as a Google Chrome extension.

Color Labs, Inc. was a start-up based in Palo Alto, California. Its main product was the eponymous mobile app for sharing photos through social networking. It allowed people to take photos in addition to viewing other photos also taken in the vicinity. The application grouped photos based on a user's friends so that he or she is more likely to see those that are more relevant.

<i>Flappy Bird</i> 2013 mobile video game

Flappy Bird is a mobile game developed by Vietnamese video game artist and programmer Dong Nguyen, under his game development company .Gears. The game is a side-scroller where the player controls a bird, attempting to fly between columns of green pipes without hitting them. Nguyen created the game over the period of several days, using a bird protagonist that he had designed for a cancelled game in 2012.
