William James Spiers III (born June 5,1966) is a former professional baseball player,and an American college football coach. Formerely,he served as the director of special teams for Clemson University.
Spiers played Major League Baseball as a shortstop and third baseman from 1989 to 2001 for the Milwaukee Brewers,New York Mets,and Houston Astros.
Spiers was a punter for Clemson University. He was a first-round draft pick (13th overall) in the 1987 amateur draft. He debuted in the majors two years later with the Milwaukee Brewers on April 7,1989. He played 114 games in his rookie season,batting .255 while mostly playing at shortstop. In five further seasons,he never played more than 135 games in a season while playing away from shortstop after 1992. He was claimed off waivers by the Mets in the 1994 offseason and batted .208 in 63 games. He then became a free agent and signed with the Astros in 1996 and played with the team for the next six seasons,playing mostly at third base. He batted a career high .320 in 132 games of the 1997 season. For his baseball career,he is known for his walk off single against Trevor Hoffman and the San Diego Padres in game 2 of the 1998 1998 National League Division Series,which was the first playoff win for the team in eleven years.
On September 24,1999,while playing with the Astros against the Brewers at Milwaukee County Stadium,Spiers was attacked by a 23-year-old man while standing in the outfield before the bottom of the 6th inning. Teammate Mike Hampton was first on the scene and delivered several kicks to the attacker. He was later quoted saying "The good thing was he didn't have a weapon... I always check right field before I deliver the first pitch. It's just a habit. I looked out there and saw the guy on Billy's back... It was a scary thing. My instincts just took over. My rage took over. I was pretty furious. I wanted to get him off my teammate." After being arrested the attacker faced two counts of battery and one count of disorderly conduct. [1] Spiers wound up with a welt under his left eye,a bloody nose and whiplash. [2]
On May 21,2007,Spiers was inducted into the South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into Clemson's Hall of Fame that year. [3] From 2016 to April 2024,Spiers served as a director of special teams for the football program at his alma mater at Clemson University. He retired after the April spring game in 2024. [4]
His son,Will,was a punter for the Clemson football team. [5] His nephew,Carson,is also a baseball player in the Cincinnati Reds organization. [6]
Donald Howard Sutton was an American professional baseball pitcher who played 23 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB),primarily for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Sutton won a total of 324 games,pitched 58 shutouts including five one-hitters and ten two-hitters,and led the National League in walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP) four times. He is seventh on baseball's all-time strikeout list with 3,574.

Edwin Lee Mathews was an American professional baseball third baseman. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 17 seasons for the Boston / Milwaukee / Atlanta Braves (1952–1966);Houston Astros (1967) and Detroit Tigers (1967–68). Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978,he is the only player to have represented the Braves in the three cities they have called home. He played 1,944 games for the Braves during their 13-season tenure in Milwaukee—the prime of Mathews' career.
William Donald Doran is a former second baseman in Major League Baseball who played from 1982 to 1993 with the Houston Astros,Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers. He was the bench coach for the Kansas City Royals from 2005 to 2007 and posted a 4-6 record as the Royals' interim manager to close the 2006 season. Doran rejoined the Reds on November 2,2007,as the minor league infielding/baserunning coordinator. After previously serving as the minor league field coordinator,Doran moved into the role of special assistant to the general manager,player performance role for the Reds for the 2019 season.

He played 15 seasons as a center fielder;he spent ten of his fifteen seasons with the Houston Colt .45s / Astros before playing 2 All-Star seasons for the Los Angeles Dodgers and then two more seasons with three other teams. Wynn was nicknamed "The Toy Cannon" because his bat was described as having a lot of "pop" for his small size at 5 ft 9 in (1.75 m) and 160 lb (73 kg).

Robert Thomas Aspromonte is an American former professional baseball player and business entrepreneur. He played as a third baseman in Major League Baseball in 1956 and then from 1960 to 1971,most prominently as a member of the newly formed Houston Colt .45s expansion team where,he became the regular third baseman for the first seven seasons of the young franchise. As well as being the first-ever batter for Houston,he was also the last Brooklyn Dodger to appear in a major league game. He also played for the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets.
