Delino Lamont DeShields (born January 15,1969),also nicknamed "Bop",is an American former professional baseball second baseman and current baseball coach. He played for 13 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Montreal Expos,Los Angeles Dodgers,St. Louis Cardinals,Baltimore Orioles,and Chicago Cubs between 1990 and 2002. He is currently the manager of the minor league Harrisburg Senators,the Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
His son Delino DeShields Jr. played in MLB for seven seasons,and his daughter Diamond DeShields plays for the Chicago Sky in the WNBA.
DeShields was born in Seaford,Delaware where he was raised by his mother and grandmother. He was an All-American in baseball and basketball at Seaford High School. DeShields signed a letter of intent to play college basketball at Villanova University. However,after being selected as the 12th overall pick in the 1987 MLB draft,he chose a career in baseball. [1]
DeShields signed for $130,000 with the Montreal Expos. [1]
He made his Major League debut on Opening Day of the 1990 season. He recorded four hits in his debut,the most for a debutant in the National League since Mack Jones 29 seasons earlier. [2] He became the regular second baseman for the Expos in 1990, [3] finishing in second place for the NL Rookie of the Year award. [4] He suffered from a sophomore slump in 1991,but went on to post his two best years in 1992 and 1993,hitting .294 and averaging 45 stolen bases.
On November 19,1993,DeShields was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for then-prospect Pedro Martínez. In retrospect,this is considered one of the worst trades in Dodgers history. [5] DeShields hit .241 during his three years in Los Angeles,while Martinez went on to win three Cy Young Awards and established himself among the greatest pitchers of all time. [6] [7]
In November 1996,DeShields signed as a free agent with the St. Louis Cardinals. In December 1998,he signed with the Baltimore Orioles. [6] On April 4,2001,he was the last out in Hideo Nomo's no-hitter against the Baltimore Orioles. [8] In July 2001,the Orioles released DeShields and he signed with the Chicago Cubs. [6]
DeShields is the co-founder of the Urban Baseball League. He also travels with Oil Can Boyd to promote baseball in African American communities.
DeShields managed the Dayton Dragons,a single-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds,in the 2011 and 2012 seasons. [9] On December 12,2012,it was announced that DeShields would become the manager for the Reds Double-A minor league team,the Pensacola Blue Wahoos [10] for the 2013 season. On December 1,2014,DeShields became manager of the Louisville Bats,replacing Jim Riggleman. [11]
After spending the 2022 season as the Cincinnati Reds' first base and baserunning coach,DeShields was fired on October 6,2022,following a season that saw Cincinnati lose 100 games. [12]
In 2023,he became the manager of the Harrisburg Senators,the Washington Nationals Double-A affiliate. [13] [14]
DeShields is married to Michelle Elliott DeShields,an educator and television host for the PBS series Georgia Traveler airing on Georgia Public Broadcasting. He has five children;two from his first marriage,Delino Jr. and Diamond,along with three from his current marriage,D'Angelo,Denim and Delaney. Two children from his earlier marriage followed in his footsteps and became professional athletes. Delino Jr. was an outfielder in Major League Baseball from 2015 to 2021, [15] and Diamond plays for the Chicago Sky of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). [16] [17]
Frank Robinson,nicknamed "The Judge",was an American professional baseball outfielder and manager in Major League Baseball (MLB) who played for five teams over 21 seasons:the Cincinnati Reds (1956–1965),Baltimore Orioles (1966–1971),Los Angeles Dodgers (1972),California Angels (1973–1974),and Cleveland Indians (1974–1976). In 1975,Robinson became the first Black manager in big-league history,as the player-manager of the Indians.
The Delmarva Shorebirds are a Minor League Baseball team based in Salisbury,Maryland. They are members of the Carolina League and the Single-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Their home games are played at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds were members of the Class A South Atlantic League (SAL) from 1996 to 2020 and the Low-A East in 2021,though this was renamed the Carolina League and reclassified as Single-A in 2022. They won two SAL championships,in 1997 and 2000. Also in 1997,the Shorebirds received Baseball America's Bob Freitas Award for Class A baseball.
Todd Edward Zeile is an American former professional baseball third baseman,catcher,and first baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played sixteen seasons,from 1989 to 2004,for the St. Louis Cardinals,Chicago Cubs,Philadelphia Phillies,Baltimore Orioles,Los Angeles Dodgers,Florida Marlins,Texas Rangers,New York Mets,Colorado Rockies,New York Yankees,and Montreal Expos. Zeile graduated from UCLA,where he played collegiate baseball primarily as a catcher. Only five players in MLB history have played for more teams. Zeile currently serves as a main pregame and postgame analyst for the New York Mets on SportsNet New York.
Ronald Dale Kittle is an American former left fielder and designated hitter in Major League Baseball (MLB). He was known for his home run hitting power,and was named the 1983 AL Rookie of the Year. Kittle played for the Chicago White Sox,New York Yankees (1986–87),Cleveland Indians (1988) and Baltimore Orioles (1990). He batted and threw right-handed. Kittle was also a manager for the minor league Schaumburg Flyers.
Alan Anthony Wiggins was an American professional baseball player. He was a second baseman and outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the San Diego Padres and Baltimore Orioles between 1981 and 1987. A speedy leadoff hitter,Wiggins had his best season with the pennant-winning Padres in 1984. He batted one slot ahead of Tony Gwynn in the lineup that year,and the pair's offensive production helped the Padres win the National League Championship Series (NLCS) and advance to the World Series.
Jerry Wayne Hairston Jr. is an American former professional baseball infielder and outfielder. He played 16 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Baltimore Orioles,Chicago Cubs,Texas Rangers,Cincinnati Reds,New York Yankees,San Diego Padres,Washington Nationals,Milwaukee Brewers,and Los Angeles Dodgers. He played every position except pitcher and catcher during his baseball career. He is the grandson of former major leaguer Sam Hairston,the son of former major leaguer Jerry Hairston Sr.,and the brother of Scott Hairston.
Juan Gabriel Castro,is a Mexican professional baseball coach and former infielder,who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Los Angeles Dodgers,Cincinnati Reds,Minnesota Twins,Baltimore Orioles,and Philadelphia Phillies,during his 17-year big league career. Castro was known mainly for his defensive abilities. He was primarily a reserve player. Castro batted and threw right-handed. Following his retirement as a player,Castro joined the Dodgers organization as a coach. During the 2020 and 2021 seasons,Castro was the infield coach for the Phillies.
Philip Mason Garner is an American former professional baseball player and manager. He played in Major League Baseball as an infielder with the Oakland Athletics,Pittsburgh Pirates,Houston Astros,Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants from 1973 to 1988. With the Pirates,he won the 1979 World Series over the Baltimore Orioles. He was manager of the Astros from July 14,2004 to August 27,2007,leading Houston to a World Series appearance in 2005.
Fernando Gabriel Tatís Medina Sr. is a Dominican former professional baseball third baseman who is the manager of the Estrellas Orientales of the Dominican Professional Baseball League. Over his 11-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career,Tatís played for the Texas Rangers,St. Louis Cardinals,Montreal Expos,Baltimore Orioles,and New York Mets. He holds the major league record for runs batted in (RBI) in an inning,a feat that he achieved by hitting two grand slams in one inning during a game on April 23,1999,becoming the only player in MLB history to do so. Einar Antonio Díaz is a Panamanian professional baseball player and coach currently a coach for the AAA Gwinnett Stripers. Darold Duane Knowles is an American former professional baseball pitcher and coach,who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1965 through 1980,most notably as a member of the Oakland Athletics dynasty that won three consecutive World Series championships between 1972 and 1974. In the 1973 World Series,Knowles became the first pitcher to appear in all seven games of a World Series. He also played for the Baltimore Orioles,Philadelphia Phillies,Washington Senators / Texas Rangers,Chicago Cubs,Montreal Expos,and St. Louis Cardinals. Knowles batted and threw left-handed. In 2014,he was hired as the pitching coach of the Florida State League's Dunedin Blue Jays.
David Michael Trembley is an American professional baseball executive who served as the director of player development of the Atlanta Braves in 2015. Trembley has been the bench coach for the Houston Astros and a manager of the Baltimore Orioles. Before managing the Orioles,Trembley was a minor league manager for twenty seasons,compiling a 1,369–1,413 record. He won two league titles and earned Manager of the Year awards in three leagues. In December 2001,Baseball America selected him as one of minor league baseball's top five managers of the previous 20 years. He served as a coach in the inaugural Futures Game in 1999 and also served as manager for the Southern League and Double-A All-Star Games that season. Trembley has worked for the Baltimore Orioles,Chicago Cubs,Pittsburgh Pirates,San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves.
