HMHS Britannic Olympic-class ocean liner and WWI hospital ship

HMHSBritannic was the third and final vessel of the White Star Line's Olympic class of steamships and the second White Star ship to bear the name Britannic. She was the youngest sister of the RMS Olympic and the RMS Titanic and was intended to enter service as a transatlantic passenger liner. Shipwreck Physical remains of a beached or sunk ship

A shipwreck is the wreckage of a ship that is located either beached on land or sunken to the bottom of a body of water. Shipwrecking may be intentional or unintentional. There were approximately three million shipwrecks worldwide as of January 1999, according to Angela Croome, a science writer and author who specialized in the history of underwater archaeology.

The year 1981 in archaeology involved some significant events.

RMS Republic (1903) Steamship

RMS Republic was a steam-powered ocean liner built in 1903 by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, and lost at sea in a collision in 1909 while sailing for the White Star Line. The ship was equipped with a new Marconi wireless telegraphy transmitter, and issued a CQD distress call, resulting in the saving of around 1,500 lives. Known as the "Millionaires' Ship" because of the number of wealthy Americans who traveled by her, she was described as a "palatial liner" and was the flagship of White Star Line's Boston service. This was the first important marine rescue made possible by radio, and brought worldwide attention to this new technology.

Ghosts of the Abyss 2003 documentary film directed by James Cameron

Ghosts of the Abyss is a 2003 American documentary film produced by Walden Media. It was directed by James Cameron after his 1997 film Titanic. During August and September 2001, Cameron and a group of scientists staged an expedition to the wreck of the RMS Titanic. They dived in Russian deep submersibles to obtain more detailed images than anyone had before. Using two small, purpose-built remotely operated vehicles, the documentary offers glimpses into the Titanic wreck and, with CGI, superimposes the ship's original appearance on the deep-dive images.

Treasure hunting Physical search for treasure

Treasure hunting is the physical search for treasure. For example, treasure salvors try to find sunken shipwrecks and retrieve artifacts with archaeological value. In many instances, it takes treasure salvors months or years of searching before they even find the lost ship(s) for which they are searching. It is a very expensive process which is why archaeologists rely on treasure salvors for the information recovered. In many instances, discovery of a wreck only occurs after searching tens of thousands of nautical miles and recovery would be impossible for archaeologists due to the depth of the wreck. In Florida, treasure salvors generously donate 20% of material found on each site to the state for display in museums while also meticulously cataloguing each artifact for archaeologists and contributing much knowledge to the understanding of the wreck itself.

Titanic British passenger liner that sank in 1912

RMS Titanic was a British ocean liner that sank in the early hours of 15 April 1912 as a result of striking an iceberg on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, United States. It was the second time White Star Line had lost a ship on its maiden voyage, the first being the RMS Tayleur in 1854. Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, approximately 1,500 died, making the incident one of the deadliest peacetime sinkings of a single ship. Titanic, operated by the White Star Line, carried some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as hundreds of emigrants from the British Isles, Scandinavia, and elsewhere in Europe who were seeking a new life in the United States and Canada. The disaster drew public attention, spurred major changes in maritime safety regulations, and inspired a lasting legacy in popular culture.

The bow is still recognisable with many preserved interiors, despite deterioration and damage sustained hitting the sea floor; in contrast, the stern is heavily damaged. A debris field around the wreck contains hundreds of thousands of items spilled from the ship as she sank.
