Bindu Menon (born 1970) is an Indian neurologist, health activist, researcher and academician from Andhra Pradesh. [1] She is known for providing free treatment to patients with Neurological disorder in rural areas of India through her organization, the Dr. Bindu Menon Foundation. [2] [3] [4] She runs an initiative called Neurology-on-Wheels, offering free healthcare services to remote areas since 2013. [2]

Menon received the Mridha Spirit of Neurology Humanitarian Award [5] and the A. B. Baker Teacher Recognition Award [6] from the American Academy of Neurology in 2022. In 2021, the World Stroke Organization honoured her with the Fellowship of the World Stroke Organization (FWSO). [2] She is also noted for her research in the field of epilepsy and other neurological diseases.[ citation needed ]

Early life and education

She was born in 1970. She received her MBBS at Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal and her MD at Gajara Raja Medical College. In 2002, she obtained her DM Neurology and Diplomate of National Board in Neurology from Bombay Hospital Institute Medical Sciences. [7] She conducted research on the effects of prolonged medication on Epilepsy patients on bone health as part of a project funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research. [3] Menon received additional training in neurology at University College London. [8]

Work

Bindu Menon began her career as an assistant professor at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences in Tirupati. After eight years there, she moved to Nellore and worked as the Professor and Head of the Department of Neurology at Narayana Medical College and Hospital. [1] She is currently serving as a Professor and Head of the Neurology Department at Apollo Specialty Hospitals in Nellore. [9]

Bindu Menon founded the Dr Bindu Menon Foundation in 2013 as a non-profit organisation. She runs a program called Neurology on Wheels, which she started in 2015 and provides medical care to needy patients in rural areas using a small van. As of 2019, the program served hundreds of patients in about 23 villages in Andhra Pradesh. The program delivers medical screenings, distributes medications, and holds awareness programs to educate the community about stroke and epilepsy risks and symptoms. It operates in randomly selected villages on Sundays. She also conducts school and college awareness camps. [10] [9] [11]

Menon has launched an app for persons with epilepsy to track their treatment and manage their seizures. The app includes features such as a medication list with reminders and the ability to upload videos of seizure events for review by a doctor. [10] She has been working to create awareness about Epilepsy, Stroke, and other Neurological disorder since 2008. [2] Her Neurology on Wheels has provided stroke and epilepsy screening and treatment to over 12,000 people. Menon has organized 200 free medical camps and through her Neurology on Wheels initiative, has provided treatment for 352 cases of hypertension, 129 cases of diabetes, 138 cases of stroke, and 105 cases of epilepsy, as of January 2023. She has also conducted 210 awareness programs, reaching approximately 35,000 people and educating them on epilepsy, brain stroke, and other related diseases. [2] [12]

She also serves as the Convenor of the Indian Women Scientists' Association, Nellore. In 2019, she delivered a TEDx talk at AIIMS Bhubaneswar about her life and her project, Neurology on Wheels. [13] She was chosen as a OneNeurology Ambassador by the European Federation of Neurological Associations (EFNA) and the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) to collaborate on the World Health Organization (WHO)'s global action plan for epilepsy and other neurological disorders. In 2020, the World Federation of Neurology awarded her an education grant to study the impact of community intervention to reduce the risk of stroke in the rural community. [15] She also serves as the chief editor for the Epilepsy India Newsletter, a magazine published jointly by the Indian Epilepsy Association and the Indian Epilepsy Society. [16]

Awards and honours

In April 2022, she was awarded the Fellowship of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN) and the Mridha Spirit of Neurology Humanitarian Award from the American Academy of Neurology and the American Brain Foundation. [2] In 2021, she received the A. B. Baker Teacher Recognition Award from the American Academy of Neurology for her work in education. She also received the Fellowship of the World Stroke Organization (FWSO) from the World Stroke Organization. [2] [17] She has been a research committee member of the World Stroke Organization since 2020. [18]

In 2018, she received the World Stroke Organization Award in the Individual Achievement category from the World Stroke Organization. In 2019, she was honoured with the J J Rao Oration by the Geriatric Society of India. [19] In August 2019, she received the Sakshi Excellence Award for Healthcare at a ceremony in Hyderabad, presented by E. S. L. Narasimhan, the Governor of Telangana. [20]

In 2017, she received the International League Epilepsy (ILAE) Leadership Award at the International Epilepsy Congress and in 2016, [21] she was given the H. C. Bajoria oration Award at the Joint Annual Conference of the Indian Epilepsy Association and Indian Epilepsy Society. [22]

He is known for his work in the field of epilepsy including laboratory-based and clinical research, the clinical care of patients with epilepsy, and advocacy for the needs of patients and family members living with epilepsy. He was the originator of the “Academy of Medical Educators” concept, and is the recipient of teaching awards both at UCSF and nationally. He has served as the Dean for Medical Education at Harvard Medical School, and as President of the American Epilepsy Society. In 2017, he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in recognition of his contributions to American medicine.

The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, in 2014 for his contributions to the field of neuroscience.

He is a recipient of Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category and the Rajyotsava Prashasti, the second highest civilian award of the Government of Karnataka.

Darab Jehangir Jussawala (1915–1999) was an Indian medical-cum-surgical oncologist, medical writer and the director of Tata Memorial Centre. He was the co-founder of Indian Cancer Society, along with Naval Tata in 1951, and the founder of the Indian Cancer Rehabilitation Centre in Parel, Mumbai, in 1956, the first such centre in India and the largest in Asia. He served as the director of Lady Ratan Tata Medical and Research Center and as the honorary consultant at two Mumbai hospitals, Breach Candy Hospital and Jaslok Hospital. An elected fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, National Academy of Medical Sciences, Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and the American College of Surgeons, he was a recipient of the Dhanwantari Award as well as several Oration Awards. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1975, for his contributions to Medicine.

Mambalikalathil Sarada Menon was an Indian psychiatrist, social worker and the founder of Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF), a Chennai-based non-governmental organization working for the rehabilitation of people afflicted with schizophrenia and other mental disorders. Madakasira Vasantha Padma Srivastava is an Indian neurologist, medical academic and writer, and the professor of neurology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. She is known for pioneering Acute Stroke Programme (Code-Red), a medical initiative for supporting patients afflicted with epilepsy and stroke, incorporating Hyperacute Reperfusion strategies including the thrombolysis program. The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for her contributions to medical science.

Subramanian Kalyanaraman is an Indian neurosurgeon and a former head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. He was known for his pioneering techniques in stereotactic surgery and is an elected fellow of a number of science and medical academies including the National Academy of Medical Sciences and the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Medical Sciences in 1969.

Amita Aggarwal is an Indian clinical immunologist, rheumatologist and a Professor and Head at the Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology of the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow. Known for her studies in autoimmune rheumatic diseases, Aggarwal is a recipient of the Shakuntala Amir Chand Award of the Indian Council of Medical Research and an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India, National Academy of Medical Sciences and the National Academy of Medical Sciences. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded her the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards, for her contributions to biosciences in 2004.

Ashalatha Radhakrishnan is an Indian neurologist and a professor of neurology at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology. Her research on various neurological disorders have been documented by a number of articles. She has also contributed to several books, including Status Epilepticus: Practical Guidelines in Management, a handbook on Status epilepticus. She was the convener of workshop on epilepsy at the Monsoon Summit 2017 organized by the Kerala Association of Neurologists. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded her the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards, for her contributions to biosciences, in 2010.

Kurupath Radhakrishnan is an Indian neurologist and epileptologist, who has established R Madhavan Nayar Center for Comprehensive Epilepsy Care, (RMNC) at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) Thiruvananthapuram, India. He has contributed for the resurgence of epilepsy surgery in India during 1990s, after the decline in 1970s. He also served as the director of SCTIMST from 2009 - 2013. After his retirement he worked at the Department of Neurology, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka, India; and at the Department of Neurology, Amrita Advanced Epilepsy Center, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Cochin, Kerala, India. Currently he is working as a senior Consultant, Department of Neurosciences, Avitis Institute of Medical Sciences, Nemmara, Palakkad, Kerala, India.
