On June 17, 2017, jihadists from Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin attacked Malian forces in Bintagoungou, Tombouctou Region, Mali.
Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin formed in early 2017 as a coalition of five separate jihadist groups that rebelled against the Malian government in 2012. [1] On June 1, 2017, several weeks prior to the Bintagoungou attack, the group ambushed Malian soldiers at Tikerefinadji, killing three soldiers and injuring three more. [2]
The attack began around 5am local time at the Malian military base in Bintagoungou. [3] The jihadists arrived at the camp with three pick-ups, which they parked on the outskirts before walking silently by foot to the camp itself. [4] After the jihadists stabbed a sentry, the main assault began. In the fighting, the camp's ammo depot was burned, eight vehicles were burned, and one was captured. [4] Reinforcements from Goundam arrived around 8am, by which point the jihadists had already fled. [4]
The Malian army stated in a press release that same day that five soldiers were killed in the attack, eight were injured, and eight vehicles were destroyed. The injured soldiers were evacuated to Timbuktu by MINUSMA. Four other soldiers were reported missing. [4] The attack was claimed by JNIM on June 21, who stated they had only lost one fighter. [5]
The Mondoro attack took place on 4 March 2022, when al-Qaeda-linked jihadists attacked a Malian military base, causing heavy casualties.
On February 3, 2021, Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists from Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin attacked a Malian base in the remote town of Boni. French troops from Operation Barkhane came to the Malians' aid, and successfully repulsed the attack. The attack came in direct response to the recent Franco-Malian counteroffensive of Operation Eclipse.
On January 24, 2021, jihadists from Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) launched simultaneous attacks on Malian troops stationed in the towns of Boulikessi and Mondoro, Mali. The Malian forces, combined with French weapons from Operation Barkhane, repulsed the JNIM attacks from both towns.
On April 6, 2020, jihadist militants from the al-Qaeda linked Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) attacked a secluded Malian military base in Bamba, killing dozens of Malian soldiers. A raid in retribution the following day killed JNIM leader Abu Yahya al-Jizari.
The battle of Boulikessi took place between September 30 and October 1, 2019. Jihadists from JNIM and Ansarul Islam attacked Malian bases in Boulikessi and Mondoro, killing between 40 and 85 Malian soldiers, making it the deadliest attack for the Malian army since the Second Battle of Kidal in 2014.

Over thirty Malian soldiers were killed in the attack.
On 26 May 2024, Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) jihadists attacked a Malian Army and Wagner Group base in Mourdiah, Koulikoro Region, Mali. The attack was repelled, and dozens of jihadists were killed.
On July 5, 2017, jihadists from Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) attacked Nigerien forces near Midal, Niger. The attack was the first claimed by JNIM in Niger.
The Tin-Ediar attack or Déou attack occurred on February 17, 2023 when Burkinabe soldiers were ambushed by the Islamic State – Sahil Province (ISGS) near the village of Tin-Ediar while travelling between Déou and Oursi, Burkina Faso. Over 70 Burkinabe soldiers were killed in the ambush, and Burkinabe authorities stated 160 ISGS fighters were killed.
