Black Friday is a single by thrash metal band Gwar, issued on picture disc for Record Store Day Black Friday 2016. [1] It is the first studio material released by the band since founding member and lead singer Dave Brockie died of a heroin overdose on March 23, 2014. [2] Side A (dubbed "Side Oderus") contains the band's final studio recording with Brockie, and side B (dubbed "Side Blothar") contains the band's first studio recording with new lead singer Michael Bishop as his new character Blothar the Berserker. Side B also features the only appearance of the character Vulvatron Destructo, portrayed by singer and seamstress Kim Dylla, due to her dismissal from the band in early 2015. [3]
Thrash metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music characterized by its overall aggression and often fast tempo. The songs usually use fast percussive beats and low-register guitar riffs, overlaid with shredding-style lead work. The lyrics often deal with social issues and criticism of The Establishment, using direct and denunciatory language, an approach borrowed from hardcore punk.
Gwar, often stylized as GWAR, is an American heavy metal band formed in Richmond, Virginia in 1984, composed of and operated by a frequently rotating line-up of musicians, artists and filmmakers collectively known as Slave Pit Inc. Following the death of frontman and lead singer Dave Brockie in 2014, the group has continued without any of its founding members.
Picture discs are gramophone (phonograph) records that show images on their playing surface, rather than being of plain black or colored vinyl. Collectors traditionally reserve the term picture disc for records with graphics that extend at least partly into the actual playable grooved area, distinguishing them from picture label discs, which have a specially illustrated and sometimes very large label, and picture back discs, which are illustrated on one unplayable side only.
The single consists of re-recorded cover songs that were initially released through The A.V. Club's annual A.V. Undercover series. The lyrics of the Jim Carroll Band's "People Who Died" were rewritten to include the names of friends of the band who had died. [4] Each verse is sung by a different member of the band. The rewritten lyrics honor actor and comedian Robin Williams, Peter Steele of Type O Negative, Jeff Hanneman of Slayer, Jackass member Ryan Dunn, local friend David Castleman, former Death Piggy drummer Sean Sumner, Pantera and Damageplan guitarist Dimebag Darrell, Ministry and Rigor Mortis guitarist Mike Scaccia, freak show performer Crazy White Sean, and former Gwar members Cory Smoot and Dave Brockie.
The A.V. Club is an online newspaper and entertainment website featuring reviews, interviews, and other articles that examine films, music, television, books, games, and other elements of pop culture media. The A.V. Club was created in 1993 as a supplement to The Onion, despite having a minimal presence on its website in its early years. A 2005 website redesign placed The A.V. Club in a more prominent position, allowing its online identity to grow. Unlike its parent publication, The A.V. Club is not satirical.
A.V. Undercover was an American live music web series created by The A.V. Club, distributed on their website. The series premiered on March 16, 2010., ending after the 7th season in 2017.
James Dennis Carroll was an American author, poet, autobiographer, and punk musician. Carroll was best known for his 1978 autobiographical work The Basketball Diaries; the book inspired a 1995 film of the same title that starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Carroll.

Side Oderus:
Lead guitar is a musical part for a guitar in which the guitarist plays melody lines, instrumental fill passages, guitar solos, and occasionally, some riffs within a song structure. The lead is the featured guitar, which usually plays single-note-based lines or double-stops. In rock, heavy metal, blues, jazz, punk, fusion, some pop, and other music styles, lead guitar lines are usually supported by a second guitarist who plays rhythm guitar, which consists of accompaniment chords and riffs.
Backing vocalists or backup singers are singers who provide vocal harmony with the lead vocalist or other backing vocalists. In some cases, a backing vocalist may sing alone as a lead-in to the main vocalist's entry or to sing a counter-melody. Backing vocalists are used in a broad range of popular music, traditional music and world music styles.
Balsac the Jaws of Death is the rhythm guitarist in the rock band Gwar. He appears as a humanoid creature with a face resembling a bear-trap. Balsac is usually portrayed wielding a giant battleaxe. In contrast to the other bandmates, Balsac speaks with a pretentious British accent until Lust in Space, where he speaks with an American accent during an argument with Oderus Urungus on the track "Where Is Zog?", though he also speaks without an accent during the argument in "Have You Seen Me?" from The Road Behind EP.
Side Blothar:
Michael Bishop is an American musician.
Blöthar Brown is the current lead vocalist, and occasional bassist, in the metal band Gwar. He appears as a stout pigface horned goblin. Gwar's appearance at the 2014 Chicago Riot Fest debuted an udder that sprays fluids on the crowd, much like the "Cuttlefish of Cthulu" penile attachment sported by the late Gwar singer Oderus Urungus. Blöthar Brown is usually portrayed wielding a wooden shield sword or a battle-axe.
The Dave Brockie Experience or DBX was formed of three of the then-current members of Heavy metal band Gwar. The band was composed of David "Oderus Urungus" Brockie (vocals/bass), Brad "Jizmak Da Gusha" Roberts (drums), and Mike "Balsac the Jaws of Death" Derks (Guitar). DBX was a pet project of Gwar and showed some of their earlier punk roots from the "Death Piggy" era. At their shows they played some original DBX songs as well as some tunes from Death Piggy, Gwar, and X-Cops. The band enjoyed a following mostly made up of Gwar fans. Dave Brockie hinted at the possibility of the band's breakup in the past due to the exhausting nature of lower-budget touring. In February 2008, several sources reported that the band would be touring as an opening act for the reunited Green Jellÿ. Dave Brockie stated, on his website, that this was not the case and there were no official discussions concerning the tour.
Hell-O! is the debut album by Gwar. The album was released in 1988, on Shimmy Disc Records.
Scumdogs of the Universe is the second album by satirical shock rock band Gwar. The album is their first album on Metal Blade Records and was released in 1990. To date, it is the band's best-selling album.
This Toilet Earth is the fourth album released by heavy metal band Gwar. Released in 1994, this album was to be one of their oddest and most bittersweet albums. It was the first Gwar album to be censored, due to their gain in popularity as a result of MTV exposure. The music and artwork is almost cartoonish when compared to the previous albums, and the instrumentation had expanded to include horns that reinforce the goofiness. An instrumental version of the song "Jack the World" was also featured in the Beavis and Butt-Head video game for the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
Ragnarök is the fifth album, released in 1995 on Metal Blade Records, by the rock/heavy metal/punk band Gwar. This album contains the most varied vocal stylings of any Gwar album, as the majority of the band lends their vocals to the track list, as well as guest villain Cardinal Syn.
America Must Be Destroyed is Gwar’s third album, released in 1992 as their second album on Metal Blade Records. The album’s lyrical content was inspired by controversy over obscenity charges against the band and an incident in Charlotte, North Carolina in which frontman Dave Brockie’s prosthetic penile attachment, "The Cuttlefish of Cthulhu", was confiscated by police officers.
Carnival of Chaos is Gwar's sixth studio album.
We Kill Everything is the seventh album by Gwar, released in 1999 through Metal Blade Records.
Violence Has Arrived is the eighth studio album by the band Gwar. It was released on November 6, 2001, through Metal Blade Records.
War Party is the ninth studio album by the band Gwar. It was released on October 26, 2004, being the band's first album in DRT Entertainment. The album was released to positive reviews.
Beyond Hell is the tenth studio album by Gwar. Released on August 29, 2006, the album was originally announced through the band's official website on February 23, 2006. Unlike the band's output since 2001, it is a concept album and a rock opera, centering on Gwar's journey to Hell as they escape from the attacking armies of humanity.
Lust in Space is the eleventh studio album by Gwar. It was released on August 18, 2009. It is their first album since returning to their old label Metal Blade Records. The album also saw the return of former bassist Casey Orr, even though he would later part ways with the band yet again. Bloody Pit of Horror is the twelfth studio album by Gwar. It was released on November 9, 2010 on Metal Blade Records.
Battle Maximus is the thirteenth studio album by Gwar. The album was released on September 17, 2013 through Metal Blade Records. The album was the first to feature new guitarist Brent Purgason, portraying the new character Pustulus Maximus, the first album to feature bassist Jamison Land, portraying longtime character, Beefcake the Mighty and the last to feature vocalist Dave Brockie who portrayed Oderus Urungus due to Brockie's death on March 23, 2014.
Lust In Space – Live At The National is a live DVD by the American heavy metal band Gwar, recorded at The National theater in Richmond, Virginia on October 23, 2009 during the band's Lust in Space tour. Electile Disfunction '08 is a live DVD by the American heavy metal band Gwar, with segments recorded over the months of October to December 2008 during their Electile Disfunction '08 tour. Released in 2013 under Don Drakulich's Hypereal Productions label, it chronicled the return of the band's "Intergalactic Championship Wrestling" series and featured both music and wrestling matches, many of which parodied the 2008 presidential election.
The Blood of Gods is the fourteenth album by thrash metal band Gwar. It was released on October 20, 2017 by Metal Blade Records. It is the band's first album without founding member Dave Brockie, who portrayed Oderus Urungus, due to his death on March 23, 2014. The album is also the first to feature Michael Bishop since 1999's We Kill Everything, albeit portraying a new character, lead singer Blöthar the Berserker, as opposed to his role as the original Beefcake the Mighty.
