Bobbili Estate was a Zamindari in the Vizagapatam District of the Madras Presidency, presently in the Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh, India. It comprises 153 Jeroyati villages, 53 Agraharams, 5 Mokhasas by 1907 and a revenue of 8,33,000/- by 1938. It is one of the most influential Zamindari. [1] It is spread over 300 square miles. It also bought shares in many estates like Kirlampudi, Dontamuru etc. It prospered in the period of British Raj.

History

The Zamindars of this estate belong to the Venkatagiri estate Royal family. The 21st descendant of the Venkatagiri Estate owners [2] named Pedda Rayudu. During the campaign of Shere Mohammad Khan, Nawab of chicacole to the circar districts, Pedda Rayudu accompanied him and proved his valour for which he was awarded the title, Ranga Rao as hereditary title and Rajam Hunda for lease. The Zamindar built a new fort and named the place Bobbili (originally Bebbuli which means Tiger or Sher). [3] They were continuously in fight with Vizianagaram Rajah's which led to the Battle of Bobbili.

Battle of Bobbili

The battle of Bobbili in 1757, is a significant episode in the history of the region. It was between Vizianagaram and French General Marquis de Bussy against Bobbili. The army of Bobbili faced the Vizianagaram-French allies with tremendous valour but lost the war and the heir evaded from the battlefield. He later re-established the territory during the British reign. [4] [5]

During British Reign

This estate prospered during the British reign. They paid a peskash of 89,774/- by 1877. [6] They got the hereditary tile of Raja and Personal distinction of Maharaja. [7]

Relations

The Zamindars of Bobbili are closely related to the Nuzvid Estate Raja's through marital alliances. Pithapuram Estate , Venkatagiri estate, and Jetprole royal families are very closely related to Bobbili Royal family as they all claim their descent from the same ancestor. [8]

Maharaja Sir Rajagopala Krishna Yachendra, Kaiser-i-Hind (1857–1916) was an Indian nobleman and politician. He was the 28th Maharaja of Venkatagiri from 1878 to 1916, and a member of the Legislative Council of Madras from 1887 . He belonged to the royal Velugoti Dynasty of the Padmanayaka Velamas. He is known to have reformed and encouraged education during his tenure as M.L.C and even as the Maharajah of Venkatagiri.

The Venkatagiri estate was an estate in the erstwhile Madras Presidency. It was located in the Nellore district of the present-day Andhra Pradesh. The town of Venkatagiri was the administrative headquarters.

The Bobbili Fort, located in the Vizianagaram district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, was built during the middle of the 19th century in Bobbili. It has a historical link to the nearby mud fort of the same name which was destroyed during the Bobbili war in 1757 in a feud between the Rajas of Bobbili and the neighbouring Maharaja of Vizianagaram.

Pithapuram Zamindari was a Zamindari in the East Godavari district of Madras Presidency. In 1802, Pithapuram was overshadowed by the renowned Peddapuram estate. But, in 1843, all other villages of Peddapuram were lost except Kottam and they were left with only 36 villages. In this period, Pithapuram gained prominence purchased some estates of Peddapuram like Thotapalle Estate. By 1874-1875 this estate had a revenue of Rs 5 lakhs and paid a tribute of Rs 2.5 lakhs. The Pitapuram Raja sponsored the monumental classical Telugu dictionary Sri Suryarayandhra Nighantuvu and commissioned the first typewriter in Telugu.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Polavaram Estate</span>

Polavaram Estate is one the Zamindari estates in Godavari district under the jurisdiction of Madras Presidency. In 1905, The Estate was part of the Pólavaram division is the south-westernmost portion of the Gódávari Agency, and lies on the right bank of the river. At the permanent settlement of 1802-03 the entire division was all included in the Pólavaram estate. Only 24 of its villages are zamindari land, of which twelve belong to the so-called Pólavaram and Pattisam estates; five belong to the Gútála estate and four to the estate of Gangólu; and one village belongs to each of the muttas of Bayyanagúdem, Billumilli and Jangareddigúdem, which three form one estate.

Maharaja Lieut. Sir Velugoti Govinda Krishna Yachendra (1879–1937) was an Indian nobleman. He was the Maharaja of Venkatagiri in Nellore district from 1917 to 1937. He was the 29th Maharaja of Venkatagiri. He belonged to the royal Velugoti Dynasty of the Padmanayaka Velamas.
