BookCon was an annual fan convention established in 2014 in New York City. Taking the name format from other fan conventions such as Comic-Con, BookCon was established to combine pop culture and the book industry. Many authors, celebrities and publishing professionals would attend BookCon. [2] [3] In a statement made on December 1, 2020, it was announced that due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic the convention was canceled for 2021 and would be reworked for the future. [4] As of now, there have been no updates as to if the convention will return.
BookCon was run by ReedPop, which also organizes New York Comic Con, Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, Star Wars Celebration, and other events. [2] BookCon was created to boost the image and attendance of long-running book fair BookExpo America. [3]
The first BookCon was held May 31, 2014, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. [5] On May 30, a sneak preview event was held with the This Is Where I Leave You Q&A panel, featuring author Jonathan Tropper and stars of the film version, Jason Bateman and Tina Fey. [3]
The event featured a panel with best-selling novelist John Grisham. Other writers and stars there for Q&As and autograph signing included Amy Poehler (Yes Please), Martin Short (I Must Say: My Life as a Humble Comedy Legend), Jodi Picoult (Leaving Time), Kathy Reichs (Bones Never Lie), and Ruth Reichl (Delicious!). Nickelodeon also organized a Dora and Friends storytime for children. [6]
The second edition took place May 30–31 at the Javits Center in New York City. [7] Scheduled authors for the event included James Patterson, Candace Bushnell, Sherman Alexie, Julianne Moore, [8] Aziz Ansari, [9] Mindy Kaling and B. J. Novak. [10] John Hodgman of The Daily Show led a panel discussion with comedian Nick Offerman ( Parks and Recreation ), whose second book, Gumption: Relighting the Torch of Freedom with America's Gutsiest Troublemakers, was released May 26. The third BookCon was held May 14, 2016 at McCormick Place in Chicago. The event was shortened to one day, which caused complaints from fans that it was too short. About 7,000 people attended the event. Authors at the event included Alexandra Bracken, Khloé Kardashian, Kate DiCamillo, Sherman Alexie and Meg Cabot. [12] [13]
The fourth BookCon was held at the Javits Center in New York City. Authors included Dan Brown, Margaret Atwood, Kwame Alexander, Cory Doctorow, Shea Serrano, Rainbow Rowell, Veronica Roth and Soman Chainani. Celebrities at the event include scientist Bill Nye and actors Jeffrey Tambor, Mayim Bialik, Krysten Ritter, Chad Michael Murray and Andrew McCarthy. [14]
The fifth BookCon was held at the Javits Center in New York City. Authors included Angie Thomas, Victoria Aveyard, Leigh Bardugo, and Marissa Meyer. Celebrities at the event included Taye Diggs and Zach King. [15]
The sixth BookCon was held at the Javits Center in New York City. Authors included Victoria Aveyard, Leigh Bardugo, V.E. Schwab, Marie Lu, Joe Hill, Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, Maggie Stiefvater and Marissa Meyer. Celebrities at the event included Alyssa Milano, John Cena, and Evangeline Lilly.
The seventh BookCon was to be held at the Javits Center in New York City, however due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was canceled. Instead, BookCon was held virtually as "BookConline," with panels held over Facebook. [16]

The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, commonly known as the Javits Center, is a large convention center on Eleventh Avenue between 34th Street and 38th Street in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, New York City. It was designed by architect James Ingo Freed of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. The space frame structure was constructed from 1980 to 1986 and was named to honor Jacob Javits, the United States Senator for New York. When the Javits Center opened, it replaced the New York Coliseum at Columbus Circle as the city's major convention facility; the Coliseum was subsequently demolished and replaced by Time Warner Center.
BookExpo America was an annual book trade fair in the United States. BEA is almost always held in a major city over four days in late May and/or early June. Nearly all significant book publishers in the United States, and many from abroad, have booths and exhibits at BEA, and use the fair as an opportunity to showcase upcoming titles, sell current books, socialize with colleagues from other publishing houses, and sell and buy subsidiary rights and international rights. Authors, librarians, and buyers for book retailers also attend the event.
Fan Expo Canada is an annual speculative fiction fan convention held in Toronto, Ontario. It was founded as the Canadian National Comic Book Expo in 1995 by Hobby Star Marketing Inc. It includes distinctly branded sections, including GX and SFX, and formerly CNAnime. It was started by retailer Michael "Mike Carbo" Carbonaro in March 1996 in the basement of the St. Paul the Apostle Church. During its heyday from 2001 to 2008, the Big Apple Comic Con often featured multiple shows per year, with a large three-day "national" convention held in November, usually held at the Penn Plaza Pavilion. The show was owned by Wizard Entertainment from 2009 to 2013, but was reacquired by Carbonaro in 2014.
Fan Expo Dallas, previously known as Dallas Comic Con, is a three-day speculative fiction, fan convention held annually in the Dallas, Texas area. Larger in scale than the Dallas Fan Days events under the same management, Fan Expo Dallas focuses on comic book artists, writers, and publishers. These events usually also feature question and answer sessions, a large dealers room, and autograph-signing with a number of famous comic and media guests. The event is produced by Informa doing business as Fan Expo HQ.
The Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) is a Chicago fan convention dedicated to comics, pop culture, graphic novels, anime, manga, video games, toys, movies, and television. The inaugural event was held April 16–18, 2010 at the McCormick Place in Chicago.
Fan Expo Chicago, is a comic book convention held during the summer in Rosemont, Illinois, United States, at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center. It was traditionally a three-day event, but in 2006, it expanded to four days. She is best known for her young adult Grishaverse novels, which include the Shadow and Bone trilogy, the Six of Crows dilogy, and the King of Scars dilogy. She also received acclaim for her paranormal fantasy adult debut, Ninth House. The Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows series have been adapted into Shadow and Bone by Netflix and Ninth House will be adapted by Amazon Studios; Bardugo is an executive producer on both works.

They feature a wide variety of activities and panels, with a larger number of attendees participating in cosplay than most other types of fan conventions. Comic book conventions are also used as a vehicle for industry, in which publishers, distributors, and retailers represent their comic-related releases. Comic book conventions may be considered derivatives of science-fiction conventions, which began in the late 1930s.
