Boris Mordukhovich is an American mathematician recognized for his research in the areas of nonlinear analysis, optimization, and control theory. Mordukhovich is one of the founders of modern variational analysis and generalized differentiation. Currently he is Distinguished University Professor and Lifetime Scholar of the Academy of Scholars at Wayne State University (Vice President, 2009–2010 and President, 2010–2011).
Mordukhovich was born and educated in the Soviet Union; he emigrated to the United States with his family in December 1988. He developed constructions of generalized differentiation (bearing now his name), and their development and applications to classes of problems in variational analysis, optimization, equilibrium, control, economics, engineering, and other fields. [1] [2] [3] His theory and various applications have been summarized in the 2-volume monograph, [4] and in his more recent books, [5] [6] and. [7] Mordukhovich has published more than 500 journal papers.
Mordukhovich is an AMS Fellow of the Inaugural Class, [8] [9] a SIAM Fellow, [10] and a recipient of many international awards and honors, including Dr. Honoris Causa from the National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan, University of Messina, [11] [12] University of Alicante in Spain, [13] [14] [15] Babeș-Bolyai University, Romania [16] and from Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. [17] He is the Founding Editor (2008) and was a co-Editor-in-Chief (2009-2014) of Set-Valued and Variational Analysis, an international journal. Since 2016, he is a co-Editor-in-Chief, Applied Analysis and Optimization, and since 2021 he is the area editor of Journal of Optimization Theory and Application. He was Chair (2012 - 2015) of the International Working Group on Generalized Convexity and Monotonicity. [18] In 2016, he was elected to the Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti (Italy), and in 2021 he became a Foreign Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Basic economics textbooks concentrate on consumers with convex preferences and convex budget sets and on producers with convex production sets; for convex models, the predicted economic behavior is well understood. When convexity assumptions are violated, then many of the good properties of competitive markets need not hold: Thus, non-convexity is associated with market failures, where supply and demand differ or where market equilibria can be inefficient. Non-convex economies are studied with nonsmooth analysis, which is a generalization of convex analysis.

Robert Ralph Phelps was an American mathematician who was known for his contributions to analysis, particularly to functional analysis and measure theory. He was a professor of mathematics at the University of Washington from 1962 until his death.
András Prékopa was a Hungarian mathematician, a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He was one of the pioneers of stochastic programming and has been a major contributor to its literature. He amended one of the three basic model types of the discipline, chance-constrained programming, by taking into account stochastic dependence among the random variables involved. One of his main results in the area concerns the convexity theory of probabilistically constrained stochastic optimization problems. He introduced the concept of logarithmic concave measures and provided several fundamental theorems on logconcavity, which supplied proofs for the convexity of a wide class of probabilistically constrained stochastic programming problems. These results had impact far beyond the area of mathematical programming, as they found applications in physics, economics, statistics, convex geometry and other fields.
