The Brandaris is a lighthouse on the Dutch Wadden Sea island Terschelling, in Friesland. It is the oldest lighthouse in the Netherlands, listed as a Rijksmonument, number 35032 and rated with a very high historical value. [2]
The first tower was built in 1323 to guide ships on their way to Amsterdam, through the Zuiderzee, the narrow opening between Vlieland and Terschelling. A good position marking was necessary because many islands in the North Sea look very similar.
When the sea flooded Terschelling in 1570 the tower was completely destroyed. In 1592 the construction of a new tower was started, but it collapsed before it was finished because bad building materials had been used. The current tower was built in 1594.
In 1837 the tower was the first lighthouse in the Netherlands to be equipped with a rotating Fresnel lens. Electrification took place in 1907. Today, the light in the tower is controlled fully automatically.
Brandaris is the oldest preserved tower specifically built as a lighthouse in the Netherlands. In 1907 it was the first lighthouse in the Netherlands to be fitted with electric lighting. Brandaris is specially equipped to prevent birds from flying against the tower.

The name of this tower may be a reference to Saint Brendan of Clonfert.

Lange Jaap, also known as Kijkduin Light or Den Helder Light, is an active lighthouse near Fort Kijkduin in Huisduinen, Netherlands. At a height of 63.5 metres (208.2 ft) it is one of the tallest "traditional lighthouses" in the world. St. Boswells was a Saint-class Admiralty tug that was built in Scotland in 1919 and sunk by a mine in the North Sea in 1920 with the loss of 16 of her crew. The United Kingdom Admiralty owned her, but she was registered as a merchant ship, and had a civilian merchant crew.

The Vuurbaak van Katwijk aan Zee is a Dutch lighthouse in Katwijk aan Zee, in South Holland, on the North Sea. It is the second oldest lighthouse in the country; only the Brandaris (1594) is older. The lighthouse was essentially just a 12-metre-tall (39 ft) tower on top of which a fire was lit whenever Katwijker fishers were out at sea. The fire was replaced with an oil lamp in the mid-19th century; by the early 1900s there were no fishing vessels from Katwijk and the lighthouse became inactive.
The Hellevoetsluis Lighthouse is a lighthouse in Hellevoetsluis, the Netherlands. It is listed as a Rijksmonument since 1982, number 21422. Although the tower is no longer in use as a beacon, the light has not been officially extinguished and the lighthouse is still one of about thirty active light houses in the Netherlands.
SS West Arvada was a 124-metre -long American cargo steamship. She was built by Todd Pacific Shipyards, Los Angeles Division and owned by United States Shipping Board. During the night of 15–16 September 1919, the ship sank due to naval mines near Terschelling, the Netherlands. One Polish crew member died.
