Bloemfontein, also known as Bloem, is the capital city of the Free State Province of South Africa and, as the judicial capital of the nation, one of South Africa's three national capitals along with legislative capital Cape Town and administrative capital Pretoria. Bloemfontein is the seventh-largest city in South Africa. Situated at an elevation of 1,395 m (4,577 ft) above sea level, the city is home to approximately 520,000 residents and forms part of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality which has a population of 747,431. It was one of the host cities for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park is located in Free State, South Africa, near the Lesotho border. It covers an area of 340 km2 (130 sq mi). The park's most notable features are its golden, ochre, and orange-hued, deeply eroded sandstone cliffs and outcrops, especially the Brandwag rock. Another feature of the area is the numerous caves and shelters displaying San rock paintings. Wildlife featured at the park includes mongooses, eland, zebras, and over 100 bird species. It is the Free State's only national park, and is more famous for the beauty of its landscape than for its wildlife. Numerous paleontology finds have been made in the park, including dinosaur eggs and skeletons.
The Boerstaat Party is a Boer nationalist South African political party founded on 30 September 1986 by Robert van Tonder. It was never officially registered as a political party because it was unable to rally 500 persons under one roof, a requirement under South African electoral law for official political party status. It was never represented in the South African Parliament, neither in the apartheid era nor after democratisation. In 1989, it joined the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB) in declaring support for Jaap Marais, the leader of the Herstigte Nasionale Party and has worked with the HNP on occasion since. The party was a charter member of the Afrikaner Volksfront coalition group. It has also operated with the paramilitary group, the Boere Weerstandsbeweging led by Andrew Ford.
"Brand Suid-Afrika", which can directly be translated to "Burn South Africa," is a 4-track EP by South African punk rock band Fokofpolisiekar. It was released by Rhythm Records in 2006 and includes a music video of a previously released single, "Hemel Op Die Platteland (Acoustic)". The CD is about 14 minutes long without the music video.

Torynesis orangica, the Golden Gate widow, is a butterfly of the family Nymphalidae. It is only known to be found in Brandwag Buttress and Mushroom Rocks in the Golden Gate Highlands and Titanic Rock near Clarens in Free State.
Die Brandwag was the first illustrated family magazine published in Afrikaans in the Transvaal, appearing monthly between 1910 and 1922 under the joint editorship of Dr W M R Malherbe and Gustav Preller. The first issue appeared on 31 May 1910 and the last in February 1922.
Shangani Patrol is the soundtrack to the 1970 film Shangani Patrol. It was released in 1970 and was performed by the RPM Studio Orchestra, composed and conducted by Mike Hankinson, and recorded in RPM Studios Johannesburg, South Africa, by Geoff Tucker. Conducted by the composer Michael Hankinson with a session orchestra. A notable member of this group of musicians was trumpeter Eddie Calvert - also known in England as "The man with the golden horn". Part of the proceeds from the sale of this album were donated to Brandwag Fund/Fond comforts for border troops. The film was based on the true story of the Shangani Patrol.

Hoërskool Brandwag is an Afrikaans medium school in Uitenhage, South Africa, with an academic orientation. Uitenhage is an industrial town with a Volkswagen factory, the largest auto factory in Africa. The school opened in 1937, and is named after a peak in the Drakensberg in Golden Gate Highlands National Park, called "The Sentinel" in English, which appears on the school's emblem. Its motto is "U dienswillige dienaar", which was the title of the autobiography of Afrikaans literary figure Cornelis Jacobus Langenhoven.

Universitas used to be a white suburb of the city of Bloemfontein during the Apartheid era. Today, the racial composition is mixed, and a significant number of the family homes in the suburb have been adapted to serve as communal student accommodation, due to the favourable location near the campuses of the Free State University as well as the Central University of Technology.
