Breheimen is a mountain range in the Innlandet and Vestland counties in Norway. The area lies west of the Jotunheimen mountain range. The mountain range lies to the northwest of the Sognefjellsvegen road, north of the Sognefjorden, south of the Nordfjorden and Norwegian National Road 15, and east of Norwegian National Road 5 and European route E39. The mountain range includes Jostedalsbreen National Park and Breheimen National Park. [2]

The name Breheimen means "home of the glaciers", since it has many glaciers, including Norway's largest glacier, Jostedalsbreen. Other glaciers in the range include Harbardsbreen and Spørteggbreen. Some of the major mountains in the area include Skåla, Lodalskåpa, Høgste Breakulen, Tverrådalskyrkja, Hestbrepiggene, and Brenibba. The region is home to several large lakes such as Austdalsvatnet and Styggevatnet.

Jostedal Glacier

Jostedal Glacier or Jostedalsbreen (Norwegian) is the largest glacier in continental Europe. It is in Vestland county in Western Norway. Jostedalsbreen lies in the municipalities of Luster, Sogndal, Sunnfjord, and Stryn. The highest peak in the area is Lodalskåpa at a height of 2,083 metres (6,834 ft).

The park was established by royal decree on 25 October 1991, and then in 1998, it was enlarged to the northwest. The park now covers 1,310 square kilometres (510 sq mi), with the glaciers covering about 800 square kilometres (310 sq mi) of the park.

Gaupne Village in Western Norway, Norway

The 28-square-kilometre (11 sq mi) glacier lies inside Breheimen National Park. The village of Jostedal lies 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) to the west and the village of Skjolden lies 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) to the southeast.

Jostedal Former municipality in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway

Jostedal is a former municipality in the old Sogn og Fjordane county in Norway. The 533-square-kilometre (206 sq mi) municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1963. It was located in the Jostedalen valley in the northern part of the present-day municipality of Luster, in Vestland county, north of the village of Gaupne. The administrative centre was also located near the Jostedal Church in the central part of the valley.

Oppstrynsvatn

Oppstrynsvatn is a lake in the municipality of Stryn in Vestland county, Norway. It is located about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) east of the village of Stryn. The villages of Flo, Oppstryn, and Erdal are located on the shores of the lake.

Austdalsvatnet is a lake in the northwestern part of Luster Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the Breheimen mountain range at the end of the Austdalsbreen glacier, just north of the lake Styggevatnet. It is about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) east of Lodalskåpa and Brenibba, in the Jostedalsbreen glacier. The water is regulated by a dam on lake Styggevatnet and it empties into the Jostedøla river which flows south into the Gaupnefjord.

Brenibba

Brenibba is a nunatak protruding from the north end of the Jostedalsbreen glacier in the Breheimen mountain range. It is located in the municipality of Luster in Vestland county, Norway. Brenibba is 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) south of Lodalskåpa and 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) northeast of Høgste Breakulen. It is part of the Jostedalsbreen National Park. The lakes Austdalsvatnet and Styggevatnet are located 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) west of Brenibba.

Styggevatnet

Styggevatnet is a glacial lake from the glacier Jostedalsbreen in Luster Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The lake lies just southeast of the lake Austdalsvatnet. The lake is regulated by a dam and it empties into the river Jostedøla. The lake is about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) to the east of Lodalskåpa and Brenibba in Jostedalsbreen National Park.

Breheimen National Park

Breheimen National Park is a national park that was established in 2009. The park is located in the municipalities of Skjåk and Lom in Innlandet county and in Luster in Vestland county, Norway. The park covers 1,671 square kilometres (645 sq mi) of the Breheimen mountain range.

Leirvasshøi is a mountain in Skjåk Municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. The 1,728-metre (5,669 ft) tall mountain is located in the Breheimen mountains and inside the Breheimen National Park, about 18 kilometres (11 mi) southwest of the village of Grotli and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) east of the village of Oppstryn. The mountain is surrounded by several other notable mountains including Kvitlenova and Raudeggi to the north, Mårådalsfjellet and Skridulaupen to the northeast, Dyringshøi to the east, Søverhøi to the southeast, and Tverreggi to the south. The vast Jostedalsbreen glacier lies just to the southwest of this mountain.

Grovabreen

The Grovabreen glacier is located in Vestland county, Norway. It covers an area of about 20 square kilometres (7.7 sq mi) in Sunnfjord Municipality in the Sunnfjord region. The highest point on the glacier sits at an elevation of 1,636 metres (5,367 ft) above sea level. The glacier is part of Jostedalsbreen National Park, just south of the lake Jølstravatnet. The village of Skei lies about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) north of the glacier and the village of Haukedalen lies about 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) southwest of the glacier. The Jostefonn glacier lies about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to the south of this glacier; both are located at the north end of the Gaularfjellet mountains.

Oldedalen

Oldedalen is a river valley in Stryn Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The 20-kilometre (12 mi) long valley runs north-south and ends at the Nordfjorden at the village of Olden. The south end of the valley reaches up to the great Jostedalsbreen glacier inside Jostedalsbreen National Park. The small Briksdalsbreen is a smaller arm that branches off the main Jostedalsbreen glacier, and it sits at the end of the Oldedalen valley. It is a tourist attraction due to its easy to reach location. The western side of the valley is a fairly steep wall of mountains with the Myklebustbreen glacier at the top.

The Fjærland Tunnel is a 6,397-metre (3.975 mi) long road tunnel in Vestland county, Norway. The tunnel opened on 31 May 1986 and it is part of Norwegian National Road 5. The opening ceremony was led by former US vice president Walter Mondale who has family connections to Fjærland.

Jostedalen is a river valley in Luster Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The 60-kilometre (37 mi) long valley runs from the Lustrafjorden at the village of Gaupne, to the north along the river Jostedøla and along the eastern side of the Jostedal Glacier. The valley is deep, but the valley floor lies over long stretches of flat river plains interrupted by steep steps. In the north, the landscape gets pretty wild. The Jostedalsbreen National Park surrounds the valley, which brings a lot of tourism to the area. The Nigardsbreen glacier is also accessible from the valley.
