He had his first success with Brett Young released in 2017, which produced a number of hit singles, most notably "In Case You Didn't Know" and "Mercy".

The earliest of Musgraves's material was released in the early 2000s with the issuing of demo albums, beginning with children duo effort Texas Two Bits with fellow student Alina Tatum, which self-released Little Bit of Texas in 2000. This was followed by her first solo album Movin' On (2002). She signed to Mercury Nashville in 2012. In early 2013, Musgraves released her debut full-length album Same Trailer Different Park. Then came the launch of his debut studio album Montevallo in October 2014. It topped the Top Country Albums chart and peaked at number three on the Billboard 200. The album also peaked at number two on the Canadian Albums Chart and received a Gold certification from Music Canada. Founded in 2012, the band began recording after three of its members, Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen, and Brad Tursi, all had success as songwriters for other artists. This led to them self-releasing an extended play titled It Was Always Yours in 2012, followed by a self-titled one in 2014. Produced by Shane McAnally, the latter included their debut single "Shut Me Up".
