Brian L. Stafford was the 20th Director of the United States Secret Service. [1] Preceded by Lewis C. Merletti,he was sworn in on March 4,1999 by the then Secretary of the Treasury,Robert E. Rubin. He was succeeded by W. Ralph Basham.
Stafford was born in Sharpsville,Pennsylvania in 1948. [2] He attended Mount Union College,in Alliance,Ohio,where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration,and an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters. Prior to his induction into the Secret Service,Stafford served in the United States Army. He completed a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam,where he earned the Bronze Star Medal. He has been bestowed with numerous other awards including the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm,Vietnam Campaign Medal,Vietnam Service Medal,Army Commendation Medal,National Defense Service Medal,1999 Presidential Rank Award,and the Adam Walsh Rainbow Award.
Stafford joined the United States Secret Service in 1971. His first occupation in the Secret Service was a special agent assigned to the Atlanta Field Office. He was later employed in various other positions such as the Assistant Director of the Office of Protective Operations and the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Office of Protective Operations. Stafford protected Presidents Richard Nixon,Gerald Ford,Jimmy Carter,Ronald Reagan,George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He was also responsible for supervising several National Special Security Events including the 2002 Winter Olympics and the Super Bowl XXXVI. [3] He retired in January 2003,after serving more than 30 years for the Secret Service.
Stafford currently serves as a Director of McKinley Capital Management,and Vice Chairman of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. [3]
The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) was the intelligence agency of the United States during World War II. The OSS was formed as an agency of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) to coordinate espionage activities behind enemy lines for all branches of the United States Armed Forces. The Intelligence Star is an award given by the Central Intelligence Agency to its officers for "voluntary acts of courage performed under hazardous conditions or for outstanding achievements or services rendered with distinction under conditions of grave risk". The award citation is from the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and specifically cites actions of "extraordinary heroism". It is the third-highest award given by the Central Intelligence Agency,behind the Distinguished Intelligence Cross and Distinguished Intelligence Medal,and is analogous to the Silver Star,the US military award for extraordinary heroism in combat. Only a few dozen people have received this award,making it one of the rarest valor awards awarded by the US government.
Mark J. Sullivan is a former federal law enforcement agent who served as the 22nd Director of the United States Secret Service from May 31,2006,to March 27,2013. Sullivan succeeded W. Ralph Basham and was succeeded by Julia Pierson.
Lewis Carlo Merletti was the 19th Director of the United States Secret Service. He succeeded Eljay B. Bowron,and was sworn in on June 6,1997,by the Secretary of the Treasury Robert Rubin. A 25-year veteran of the United States Secret Service,Merletti has also served as Assistant Director in the Office of Training,and as the Special Agent in Charge of the Presidential Protection Division.
James F. Sloan was an American intelligence official who served as the Assistant Commandant for Intelligence and Criminal Investigations for the United States Coast Guard and head of Coast Guard Intelligence from November 17,2003 to February 27,2009. He was responsible for directing,coordinating,and overseeing intelligence and investigative operations and activities that support all U.S. Coast Guard mission objectives,the national strategy for Homeland Security,and National Security objectives.
