Bristly Peaks

The Bristly Peaks ( 69°23′S66°15′W / 69.383°S 66.250°W / -69.383; -66.250 Coordinates: 69°23′S66°15′W / 69.383°S 66.250°W / -69.383; -66.250 ) are a series of sharp, rock peaks on a ridge separating Seller Glacier and Fleming Glacier in the central Antarctic Peninsula. They were photographed from the air by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1937, and by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947. They were surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1958 and 1960. The name, applied by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee, is descriptive of the sharp peaks which suggest the bristles of a brush.

Geographic coordinate system Coordinate system

A geographic coordinate system is a coordinate system that enables every location on Earth to be specified by a set of numbers, letters or symbols. The coordinates are often chosen such that one of the numbers represents a vertical position and two or three of the numbers represent a horizontal position; alternatively, a geographic position may be expressed in a combined three-dimensional Cartesian vector. A common choice of coordinates is latitude, longitude and elevation. To specify a location on a plane requires a map projection.

Seller Glacier is a well-defined glacier, 20 nautical miles (37 km) long and 4 nautical miles (7 km) wide flowing westward into Forster Ice Piedmont, western Antarctic Peninsula, just north of Flinders Peak. Roughly surveyed by British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE), 1936–37, and resurveyed by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in December 1958.

Fleming Glacier is a broad glacier 25 nautical miles (46 km) long on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula, flowing west-northwest and terminating in Forster Ice Piedmont to the east of the Wordie Ice Shelf. The glacier was charted by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Rymill, 1934–37, and was photographed from the air by the United States Antarctic Service on September 29, 1940. This hitherto unnamed feature was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1947 for Reverend W.L.S. Fleming, Dean of Trinity Hall, Cambridge University; also, chaplain, chief scientist, and geologist of the BGLE.

The Bristly Peaks include the Messent Peak and the Brodie Peak.

Messent Peak is one of the Bristly Peaks, rising to about 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) just west of Brodie Peak and 5 nautical miles (9 km) southwest of Mount Castro in the central Antarctic Peninsula. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1977 for David R. Messent, a geodesist at the U.S. Army Topographic Command, Palmer Station, winter party 1969.

Brodie Peak is one of the Bristly Peaks, rising to 1,410 metres (4,630 ft) 5 nautical miles (9 km) south-southeast of Mount Castro, in the central Antarctic Peninsula. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1977 after Earl E. Brodie, a United States Antarctic Research Program engineer in the Palmer Station winter party, 1969.

Zilva of the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine, London, one of the principal investigators in the work which led to the production of synthetic vitamin C. He helped in the calculation of the sledging rations of many British polar expeditions between World War I and II.

Haefeli Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Haefeli Glacier is a glacier, 2 miles (3 km) wide and 6 miles (10 km) long, situated on Pernik Peninsula, Loubet Coast in Graham Land, Antarctica, at the northwest side of Finsterwalder Glacier and flowing south-southwest toward the head of Lallemand Fjord. With Finsterwalder and Klebelsberg Glaciers, its mouth merges with Sharp Glacier where the latter enters the fjord. It was first surveyed in 1946–47 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey and named by them for Robert Haefeli, a Swiss glaciologist.

Belgica Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Belgica Glacier is a glacier 8 nautical miles (15 km) long, flowing into Trooz Glacier to the east of Lancaster Hill on Kiev Peninsula, on the west coast of Graham Land. It was first charted by the British Graham Land Expedition under John Rymill, 1934–37, and named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1959 after the RV Belgica, the ship of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition under Gerlache which explored this area in 1897–99.

Gothic Mountains

The Gothic Mountains is a group of mountains, 32 kilometres (20 mi) long, in the Queen Maud Mountains of Antarctica, located west of Watson Escarpment and bounded by Scott Glacier, Albanus Glacier, and Griffith Glacier. The mountains were first visited in December 1934 by the Byrd Antarctic Expedition (ByrdAE) geological party led by Quin Blackburn. The name was proposed by Edmund Stump, leader of a U.S. Antarctic Research Program (USARP) - Arizona State University geological party which made investigations here in the 1980-81 season. The mountains are composed of granites which have weathered to produce a series of spires and peaks reminiscent of a Gothic cathedral.

Clifford Glacier is a broad glacier, about 40 nautical miles (70 km) long, flowing in an east-northeast direction to the gap between Mount Tenniel and the Eland Mountains, and then east to Smith Inlet on the east coast of Palmer Land. The upper part of this glacier was charted in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition under John Rymill; the seaward side by the United States Antarctic Service survey party which explored along this coast in 1940. During 1947 it was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition under Finn Ronne, who in conjunction with the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) charted it from the ground. It was named in 1952 by the FIDS for Sir G. Miles Clifford, at that time Governor of the Falkland Islands.

Steuri Glacier is a glacier descending the southern slopes of Mount Takahe in Marie Byrd Land. The feature is 3.5 nautical miles (6 km) west of Moll Spur. Mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy aerial photography, 1959-66. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Heinrich Steuri, United States Antarctic Research Program (USARP) glaciologist at Byrd Station, 1968-69.

Eden Glacier is a glacier 5 nautical miles (9 km) long, which flows in a southerly direction into the head of Cabinet Inlet, northwest of Lyttelton Ridge, on the east coast of Graham Land. It was charted by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) and photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947. It was named by the FIDS for Rt. Hon. Robert Anthony Eden, M.P., then British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and member of the War Cabinet.

Flinders Peak is a conspicuous triangular peak, 960 metres (3,150 ft) high, on the west end of the Bristly Peaks. The peak overlooks Forster Ice Piedmont near the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was photographed from the air by the British Graham Land Expedition and the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition. It was surveyed from the ground by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in December 1958, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Matthew Flinders, an English navigator who discovered the cause of deviation in magnetic compasses, and pointed the way to a solution, 1805–14.

The Founders Peaks are a cluster of sharp peaks and ridges located just east of Founders Escarpment and between Minnesota Glacier and Gowan Glacier, in the Heritage Range of the Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica. The peaks were mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1961–66. The name was applied by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names is association with the name Heritage Range.

Français Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Français Glacier is a glacier 4 nautical miles (7 km) wide and 12 nautical miles (22 km) long, flowing north-northeast from the continental ice to the Antarctic coast close west of Ravin Bay. Though no glaciers were noted on Captain Jules Dumont d'Urville's chart of this coast, the close correlation of his "Baie des Ravins" feature and narrative description with the indentation of the coast near the mouth of this glacier suggests first sighting of this feature by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1837–40. During December 1912 members of the Main Base Party of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) camped on the upland slopes close east of the glacier, but no reference was made to the glacier in the AAE reports, though a clear view and unpublished sketch were obtained of the distant coast to the northwest.

Godfrey Upland is a small remnant plateau with an undulating surface and a mean elevation of 1,500 metres (5,000 ft) in south-central Graham Land, Antarctica. It is bounded by Clarke, Meridian, Lammers and Cole Glaciers. The existence of the feature was known to the United States Antarctic Service, 1939–41, Finn Ronne and Carl R. Eklund having traveled along Meridian and Lammers Glaciers in January 1941. It was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947 and surveyed from the ground by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1958. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Thomas Godfrey, an American glassworker and mathematician who, at the same time as John Hadley, independently invented the quadrant, in 1730.

Hariot Glacier is a glacier flowing northwest along the south side of Morgan Upland before turning west into the northern portion of the Wordie Ice Shelf, along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was roughly surveyed by the British Graham Land Expedition, 1936–37, and the upper reaches were photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947. The glacier was surveyed from the ground by members of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey who travelled along it in December 1958, and it was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Thomas Hariot, an English mathematician who pioneered new methods of navigation under the patronage of Sir Walter Raleigh.

Mimas Peak is a sharp conspicuous peak, rising to about 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) west of the head of Saturn Glacier and 9 nautical miles (17 km) west of the Dione Nunataks in the southeast part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first seen and photographed from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935, and mapped from these photos by W.L.G. Joerg. The peak was sighted from a distance in 1949 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) and roughly positioned. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for its association with nearby Saturn Glacier, Mimas being one of the satellites of the planet Saturn. The peak and surrounding area were first mapped in detail from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition 1947–48, by D. Searle of the FIDS in 1960.

Klebelsberg Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Klebelsberg Glacier is a glacier, 7 nautical miles (13 km) long and 2 nautical miles (4 km) wide, situated at the south side of Finsterwalder Glacier and flowing from Hemimont Plateau northwestward between Armula Peak and Smilyan Bastion on Graham Land, Antarctica, toward the head of Lallemand Fjord. With Finsterwalder Glacier and Haefeli Glacier, its mouth merges with Sharp Glacier where the latter enters the fjord. It was first surveyed from the plateau in 1946–47 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, and named by them for Raimund von Klebelsberg, an Austrian glaciologist.

Sargent Glacier is a steep-walled tributary glacier, flowing southeast from the Herbert Range to enter Axel Heiberg Glacier just southeast of Bell Peak. Probably first seen by Roald Amundsen's polar party in 1911, the glacier was mapped by the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, 1928-30. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Howard H. Sargent III who made ionospheric studies at the South Pole Station in 1964.

Sölch Glacier

Sölch Glacier is a glacier on the Pernik Peninsula of the Loubet Coast in Graham Land, flowing west to Salmon Cove just north of Kanchov Peak on the east side of Lallemand Fjord. It was mapped from air photos taken by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition, 1956–57, and named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Johann Sölch (1883–1951), an Austrian glacial geologist and glaciologist.

Honnør Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Honnør Glacier is a glacier flowing to the east side of Lützow-Holm Bay, Antarctica, to the north of the Byvågåsane Peaks. A glacier tongue extending seaward from this feature was mapped by the Lars Christensen Expedition 1936–37 and named Honnørbrygga. The Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition, 1957–62, found the glacier tongue had broken off but amended the original naming to apply to the glacier.

Lind Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Lind Glacier is a glacier flowing west from Alencar Peak into the southern part of Collins Bay, on the west coast of Kiev Peninsula in Graham Land, Antarctica. It was first charted by the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition under Jean-Baptiste Charcot, 1908–10, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1959 for James Lind, the Scottish "founder of modern naval hygiene," who was the first to publish a convincing account of experimental work establishing the dietary cause and cure of scurvy, in 1755.
