The category was created in 2000 and was last awarded in 2016, before being replaced by the British Academy Television Award for Virgin TV's Must-See Moment. It was the only award voted by the public.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is an independent trade association and charity that supports, develops, and promotes the arts of film, television and video games in the United Kingdom. The 2020 British Academy Television Awards were held on 31 July 2020, hosted by British director and comic actor Richard Ayoade.
