Brittany Phelan (born September 24, 1991) is a Canadian freestyle skier who competes in ski cross. She was formerly an alpine skier, specializing in slalom skiing. She won the silver medal in women's ski cross at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Career

Phelan represented Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics, where she finished 15th in the slalom. [2] However, she suffered injuries during the following season which led to a drop in her World Cup ranking, and led her to follow in the footsteps of a number of other Canadian alpine skiers such as Louis-Pierre Hélie, Brady Leman, Kelsey Serwa and Georgia Simmerling by switching to ski cross. [3]

In December 2016, she set a new personal best in ski cross when she finished eleventh at a World Cup competition in Val Thorens, [4] following it up by setting another personal best by finishing seventh in the first of two rounds at Innichen later that month. [5] Since 2013, Brittany is part of the Tremblant athletes ambassadors program.

At the 2018 Winter Olympics, Phelan made it to the final race of the ski cross event. At one point in fourth place, she passed Sandra Näslund and Fanny Smith to finish in second place behind teammate Serwa. [6]

Tomba was able to take advantage of the introduction of spring-loaded ski gates which replaced the older, solid gates in the early 1980s by using his power to maintain a faster, more direct line through courses. Tomba won three Olympic gold medals, two World Championships, and nine World Cup season titles: four in slalom, four in giant slalom, and one overall title. He was popularly called Tomba la Bomba.

Ski cross timed skiing competitions on courses with both naturally occurring terrain and artificial features (e.g. big-air jump, high-banked turn), in which many skiers race at the same time; intentional contact with other competitors causes disqualification

Ski cross is a type of skiing competition. Despite its being a timed racing event, it is often considered part of freestyle skiing because it incorporates terrain features traditionally found in freestyle. Ski cross courses have both naturally occurring terrain and artificial features including big-air jumps and high-banked turns. What sets ski cross apart from other alpine skiing disciplines is that there's more than one skier racing down the course. Any intentional contact with other competitors leads to disqualification.
