Broadcast and Multicast Service

Broadcast and Multicast Service (BCMCS) is an interface for providing broadcast and multicast services in 3GPP2 CDMA2000 mobile networks. BCMCS can be used to transfer light video and audio clips or other data to a large group of mobile subscribers in an efficient manner. To do so, BCMCS is a so-called point-to-multipoint service. This means that multiple users receive the same information using the same radio resources.

Usage of BCMCS

BCMCS can be used for two different kind of services. Broadcast services in which all users within the broadcasting area can receive the same information and a multicast services in which only users that have subscribed to the service can receive the information Although BCMCS can be used for mobile TV, it has some limitations in the capacity that can be used for this kind of services within the network.

Enhanced Broadcast and Multicast Services

EBCMCS is an enhanced version of BCMCS. EBCMCS uses a new radio interface based on OFDM to combat problems with echoes (multipath) in the transmission.

A CDMA subscriber identity module (CSIM) is an application to support CDMA2000 phones that runs on a UICC, with a file structure derived from the R-UIM card. By porting the application to the UICC, a card with CSIM, SIM, and USIM can operate with all major cellular technologies worldwide. Multimedia Broadcast multicast service Single Frequency Network (MBSFN) is a communication channel defined in the fourth-generation cellular networking standard called Long-Term Evolution (LTE). The transmission mode is intended as a further improvement of the efficiency of the enhanced Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS) service, which can deliver services such as mobile TV using the LTE infrastructure, and is expected to compete with dedicated mobile/handheld TV broadcast systems such as DVB-H and DVB-SH. This enables network operators to offer mobile TV without the need for additional expensive licensed spectrum and without requiring new infrastructure and end-user devices.

Cellular frequencies are the sets of frequency ranges within the ultra high frequency band that have been assigned for cellular-compatible mobile devices, such as mobile phones, to connect to cellular networks. Most mobile networks worldwide use portions of the radio frequency spectrum, allocated to the mobile service, for the transmission and reception of their signals. The particular bands may also be shared with other radiocommunication services, e.g. broadcasting service, and fixed service operation.
