Broken Spectre is a virtual reality survival horror adventure game for Oculus Quest, Oculus Quest 2, and Quest Pro, developed by Games by Stitch in partnership with the Canada Media Fund and Ontario Creates. It was released on the Oculus store on June 21, 2023. It was released on Steam on August 19, 2023.

Gameplay

Broken Spectre is a cosmic horror narrative game for hand-tracking VR. [1]

Plot

In Broken Spectre players take on the role of Casey Brewer, a strong-headed adventurer haunted by her troubled family history. When Casey hears news that her father, Dr. Grant Brewer, a renowned biologist long suspected dead in the treacherous wilderness of Northwest Canada, may still be alive, she departs for Coldblood Mountain National Park to begin her search. Tracking Grant's path, Casey soon finds evidence of her father's mutated experiments and clues that lead her to higher and more dangerous elevations. As Casey ascends the mountain and slowly unravels the mystery of Grant's disappearance, she uncovers an even darker secret that threatens her entire family and the world.

Reception

Prior to its release, the game received favorable preview coverage from a number of horror genre publications, including Fangoria, which called Broken Spectre "the VR haunted park adventure of your nightmares", [2] and Bloody Disgusting, which cited the untapped potential of "cosmic horror and VR". [3] Broken Spectre was featured in the 2023 UploadVR Summer Showcase where its release date trailer debuted and June 21, 2023, release date was exclusively announced. [4] The game's announcement and release date trailers were also featured on video game and entertainment media website IGN [5] and its associated YouTube channels. [6]

Horror video game website Rely on Horror awarded Broken Spectre a 9/10 and praised the game's cosmic horror narrative, hand-tracking mechanics, and sound design, saying that it "attempts to move the genre forward" and is an experience that VR horror fans "won’t want to pass up.". [7] SVG.com also gave Broken Spectre a 9/10, praised the game's innovative hand-tracking system and stated that it set "a new standard for the genre" while pushing the boundaries of virtual reality horror. [8]

Notable VR YouTuber A Wolf in VR published a multi-part Let's Play video series featuring Broken Spectre, praising the game's horror elements and favorably comparing it to Campo Santo's acclaimed 2016 walking simulator Firewatch . [9]

Canadian film and television director Vincenzo Natali publicly praised Broken Spectre, saying “if H.P. Lovecraft designed a VR game it would probably be something like Broken Spectre." [10]

The first-generation Oculus Quest is a discontinued virtual reality headset developed by Oculus, a brand of Facebook Inc., and released on May 21, 2019. Similar to its predecessor, Oculus Go, it is a standalone device, that can run games and software wirelessly under an Android-based operating system. It supports positional tracking with six degrees of freedom, using internal sensors and an array of cameras in the front of the headset rather than external sensors. The cameras are also used as part of the safety feature "Passthrough", which shows a view from the cameras when the user exits their designated boundary area known as "Guardian". A later software update added "Oculus Link", a feature that allows the Quest to be connected to a computer via USB, enabling use with Oculus Rift-compatible software and games.

It is an anthology of different minigames based on the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, where the player must complete tasks without being jumpscared by homicidal animatronic characters. The minigames are composed of virtual reality adaptations of the main entries in the series in addition to several new experiences. Hidden inside the levels are coins that allow the player to unlock collectable objects and cassette tapes that provide insight into the game's metafictional plot.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is a virtual reality first-person shooter survival horror game for Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Oculus Quest, Oculus Quest 2, and Oculus Rift, developed by Skydance Interactive in partnership with Skybound Entertainment. Red Matter is a 2018 sci-fi virtual reality game developed and published by Spanish studio Vertical Robot. The player plays as Agent Epsilon, who crash lands on one of Saturn's moons, Rhea, and goes to explore a nearby military base belonging to the fictional People's Republic of Volgravia. The game received positive reviews from critics, who praised the atmosphere of the environments, but criticized some of the puzzles as being confusing. Red Matter released on May 24, 2018 for Oculus Rift, with versions for the HTC Vive, Oculus Quest, and PlayStation VR launching in November 2018, December 2018, and August 2019, respectively. A sequel, Red Matter 2, was released for Steam VR and Meta Quest 2 on 18 August 2022 and for Playstation VR2 on 18 May 2023.

<i>Killer Frequency</i> 2023 video game

Killer Frequency is a 2023 first-person horror-adventure game developed and published by Team17. The game takes place in a small town in 1987, where players control a DJ who acts as an impromptu radio dispatcher when a serial killer returns to terrorize the town's residents. The player must take calls from the survivors and solve various puzzles to help them escape the killer. It received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised its gameplay and comedy horror elements.
