The Brookhaven Rail Terminal (BRT) is a truck-train trans-load facility in Yaphank in Brookhaven on Long Island, New York. The 28-acre (11 ha) initial site was built with $40 million in private funds and opened on September 27, 2011. It was projected to take 40,000 long haul trucks off Long Island roads and handle 1 million tons of freight a year by 2016. [1] It includes 13,000 feet (4 km) of new track, with three tracks for construction material, such as asphalt and concrete, and six tracks for merchandise, such as flour and biodiesel. As of 2021, it handles 300,000 tons of products per year. [2]
Train operations on the site are handled by U.S. Rail of New York, LLC (reporting mark USNY), a Class III shortline railroad formed to operate the facility. Two EMD GP38 locomotives are used for on-site switching, while rail cars are delivered and picked up by the New York and Atlantic Railway which operates over the Long Island Rail Road Main Line. The site was chosen to minimize residential and traffic impacts: it is close to exit 66 on the Long Island Expressway and 1/4 mile (400 m) from the nearest home. (A proposal for a similar facility at the former Pilgrim State Hospital, 18 miles (29 km) to the west, was stymied by local opposition. [3] ) Adjacent tracts totaling an additional 93 acres (38 ha) are available for further expansion, including possible facilities for intermodal containers and refrigerated storage. The facility expected to handle over 10,000 railcars in its first full operating year. [4]
The Town of Brookhaven originally tried to stop the project claiming in 2007 that BRT had not received proper approvals from the town nor environmental impact review. However in 2010 the town settled with the developers after being advised that the federal Surface Transportation Board likely had jurisdiction over the project. The settlement included mitigation measures, such as dust controls, storm water retention, a visual landscape barrier, replanting 30% of the property, and $1 million in payments to the town. Under the agreement, the site is not to be used for loading or processing solid waste. [5]
As of mid-2012, the facility is handling three commodities, construction aggregate, flour and biodiesel. [6] The last is a result of a New York City Council requirement that heating oil sold in the city contain at least 2 percent biodiesel. [7] [8] In March 2013, BRT signed a 3-year agreement with Home Depot to accept rail shipments of lumber for Home Depot stores on Long Island. A warehouse and new siding will be built to handle the estimated 1820 rail-cars a year in additional traffic. [9]
The terminal and its New York and Atlantic connection can accept railcar sizes up to Plate F loading gauge with a gross weight for four-axle cars up to 263,000 pounds (119,300 kg). [10]
In late 2011, the company acquired two adjacent properties, increasing the site to 121 acres (49 ha), anticipating future traffic growth. BRT intends to build track on its additional property in the form of a stub-end loop, with trainload and terminal facilities along three sides of the loop. In March 2014, the Town of Brookhaven filed a lawsuit attempting to stop work on BRT’s planned expansion. BRT, in response, asked the Surface Transportation Board for a declaratory order that the new rail track under construction is a spur track, and therefore is under the STB’s exclusive jurisdiction and is not subject to licensing requirements or environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act. According to BRT’s filing, the facility has experienced strong traffic growth and its original 28-acre (11 ha) parcel is close to capacity, with all tracks in use.
In 2014, BRT averaged 130 rail cars per month and has 11 major customers. Commodities include lumber and building supplies for Home Depot and other companies, flour for several commercial bakeries, and biodiesel. Two tracks are used for arrival and departure trains, with a third "runner track" which allows the NY&A locomotives to return to the inbound end after delivering a train. Four 1100-foot (335 m) stub tracks and a track to the Home Depot facility are used for freight unloading. A short stub track that was originally intended for locomotive storage is also used to unload lumber. [11] In 2017, BRT accepted 3,215 rail cars. [12]
In June 2014, the town obtained a temporary restraining order barring "sand mining" operations on the site. The company says sand excavation is needed to lower the yard elevation below that of the LIRR main line for safety reasons. [13] In November 2015, the town and the terminal reached a tentative agreement that would allow for the terminal's expansion. [14] A final agreement was signed on March 16, 2016 that requires BRT to submit its expansion plans for town review under the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), pay the town $500,000 and keep 62 acres (25 ha) of property as undeveloped green space. Previously, BRT had maintained federal railroad regulation preempted local review. [15]
Winters Brothers affiliate Shamrock Rail acquired Brookhaven Rail LLC, the company responsible for rail operations at BRT, in 2020. The terminal itself remains a separate entity. Winters Brothers plans to build a waste-to-rail transfer facility on an adjacent property. [16]

The New York and Atlantic Railway (NY&A) is a short line railroad on Long Island, within the southeastern portion of the U.S. state of New York. It was formed in 1997 to provide freight service over the tracks of the Long Island Rail Road, a public commuter rail agency which had decided to privatize its freight operations. A subsidiary of the Anacostia Rail Holdings Company, NY&A operates exclusively on Long Island and is connected to the U.S. mainland via CSX's Fremont Secondary over the Hell Gate Bridge. It also interchanges with New York New Jersey Rail's car float at the 65th Street Yard and US Rail of New York in Yaphank, New York. Its primary freight yard is Fresh Pond Junction in Queens. It has another yard, Pine Aire Yard, in northern Bay Shore, New York. The NY&A officially took over Long Island Rail Road's freight operations on May 11, 1997, with an initial franchise for 20 years.

Tinsley was a railway marshalling yard near Tinsley in Sheffield, England, used to separate railway wagons from incoming trains and add them to new trains. It was sited immediately west of the M1 motorway, about one mile north of the Catcliffe junction. It was opened in 1965, as a part of a major plan to rationalise all aspects of the rail services in the Sheffield area; it closed in stages from 1985, with the run-down of rail freight in Britain. It was also the site of Tinsley Traction Maintenance Depot (TMD), which was closed in 1998; at its peak, 200 locomotives were allocated to this depot.

The station is the eastern terminus of the Ronkonkoma Branch and the western terminus of the Greenport Branch, and it also serves the adjacent Long Island MacArthur Airport.
Yaphank is a station in the hamlet of Yaphank, New York on the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road. It is located on Park Street near Suffolk County Road 21. It is also accessible from streets in and around Suffolk County. The distance between Yaphank and the next station, Riverhead, is the longest distance between stations in the LIRR at 14.7 miles (23.7 km). Government buildings are located on the north side of the tracks at the bottom of the Yaphank Avenue overpass.
The Hillside Facility, also called the Hillside Support Facility or the Hillside Maintenance Complex, is a maintenance facility of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in Jamaica, Queens, New York City. The Hillside facility was built between 1984 and 1991 on the grounds of a section of Holban Yard, a railroad freight yard. The facility covers 30 acres (120,000 m2) east of the former Hillside station and can maintain 60 cars at a time.
Calverton Executive Airpark also known as Peconic River Airport and Enterprise Park at Calverton (EPCAL) was a public-owned private-use airport located three miles (5 km) west of the central business district of the Calverton hamlet, in the Town of Riverhead, Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is owned by the Town of Riverhead.
Setauket was a station stop along the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. The station was located on the north side of the tracks just east of the bridge where Gnarled Hollow Road passes under the tracks in East Setauket. Access to the station was through a driveway which emptied onto Gnarled Hollow Road just north of the bridge on the east side of the road. The station opened in July 1873, and closed on June 27, 1980.
Suffolk Meadows was a quarter horse racing facility on Long Island that operated during 1977 and 1986. The racetrack was situated on a 65-acre (0.26 km2) parcel located in Yaphank northwest of the William Floyd Parkway interchange on the Long Island Expressway.
From the start of railroading in America through the first half of the 20th century, New York City and Long Island were major areas for rail freight transportation. However, their relative isolation from the mainland United States has always posed problems for rail traffic. Numerous factors over the late 20th century have caused further declines in freight rail traffic. Efforts to reverse this trend are ongoing, but have been met with limited success.
Doncaster iPort or Doncaster Inland Port is an intermodal rail terminal; a Strategic Rail Freight Interchange, under construction in Rossington, Doncaster at junction 3 of the M18 motorway in England. It is to be connected to the rail network via the line of the former South Yorkshire Joint Railway, and from an extension of the former Rossington Colliery branch from the East Coast Main Line.

Its headquarters are in West Babylon, New York; it currently serves the market of New York, but previously also served Connecticut, Florida and Vermont. It sells its recovered products worldwide. It is the largest waste management firm in Long Island. The firm has six recycling centers and twelve transfer stations.
East Yaphank is a proposed station in the hamlet of East Yaphank, New York on the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road. The station would serve Brookhaven National Laboratory and would replace the existing Yaphank station.
