Bruce Darnell (born July 19, 1957) is an American choreographer, model and television personality based in Germany.

Darnell was born and grew up in Colorado. After studying sociology, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served six years as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. [1]

In 1983, he began his career as a model in Germany. During the following years he modeled for Kenzo, Issey Miyake, Hermès and Calvin Klein in Paris, Milan, Tokyo, and New York. Darnell has also worked since 1990 as a choreographer and coached models for the catwalk.

Darnell attained public fame in Germany when he took part in 2006 in the ProSieben show Germany's Next Topmodel as a juror. In connection with advertisements for this show, he became famous for his typically American accent and his effeminacy. He has also become famous for his mistakes in spoken German, most notably "das ist der Wahrheit" (whereas it should be "die Wahrheit"; "this is the truth"), which he has since taken as a trademark expression.

He has appeared in television advertisements for C&A [2] and O2. From February to March 2008, he hosted his own fashion-themed television show, called Bruce, on Das Erste, but the show received poor ratings and was canceled after the initial run's 20 episodes. [3]

After Darnell cancelled his participation as a judge in the first season of Das Supertalent due to scheduling difficulties, [4] music producer Dieter Bohlen expressed the wish to cast Darnell as a judge for the fifth season of the RTL casting show Deutschland sucht den Superstar, but the broadcaster refused. [5] From 2008 to 2010, Darnell was a jury member on Das Supertalent. [6] Darnell also appeared again as a catwalk coach in the 2008 Supermodel show on the Swiss channel 3+ TV. [7] In October 2009, his first perfume Bruce for men was launched, Darnell for women. [8] In September 2011, he was appointed to the jury of Deutschland sucht den Superstar 2012 together with Natalie Horler. [9] From 2013 to 2020, Darnell sat on the jury of Das Supertalent. In 2021, RTL announced that with the departure of head judge Dieter Bohlen, Darnell would also leave the show. In 2015, Darnell did advertising for the furniture association Einrichtungspartnerring VME. In December 2021, he hosted the program Surprise! The Bruce Darnell Show. [10] This was not continued in view of a 3.2 percent market share among 14- to 49-year-olds. [11]

The fourth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar was aired on German channel RTL from February to May 2007. Mark Medlock, the season's winner, was awarded a contract with Sony BMG. The judges in this season were Dieter Bohlen, Heinz Henn, Anja Lukaseder. It was hosted by Marco Schreyl and Tooske Ragas. The viewers chose the contestant's fates as they were able to call for their favorite contestant. The voting results were published on 7 May. The winner got a 10-year contract and €100,000. Twenty percent went to the winner's manager who was chosen by the creators.

<i>Dieter: Der Film</i> 2006 film

Dieter: Der Film is a 2006 satirical animated film based on Nichts als die Wahrheit, the autobiography of German music producer Dieter Bohlen published in 2002. The entirety of the soundtrack, including the theme song "Gasoline", was written, composed, and produced by Bohlen. The film was broadcast for the first time on 4 March 2006 on RTL.

Das Supertalent is a German talent show, part of the internationally successful Got Talent franchise, presented by Lola Weippert and Chris Tall. Just like in all other versions of the franchise, auditions take place and the judges review their talent and then later the home audience votes in an election to deem who wins. The prize money is €50,000.

The ninth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar was broadcast on German channel RTL from 7 January to 27 April 2012. Luca Hänni won the series. Jury members Fernanda Brandão and Patrick Nuo left DSDS and were replaced by Bruce Darnell and Cascada's Natalie Horler. As the winner, Luca Hänni received a recording contract with Universal Music Group and €500,000. Participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30 and living in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The auditions stage had 34 audition events in 33 cities across Germany, Austria or Switzerland. 35,401 participants auditioned for season 9. Marco Schreyl will not be returning to host season 10.

The tenth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar was broadcast on German channel RTL from 5 January to 11 May 2013. The winner received a recording contract with Universal Music Group and €500,000. There were new features in season 10. Participants had to be between 16 and 30 years old and could audition in 30 cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Bill and Tom Kaulitz from Tokio Hotel and Mateo from Culcha Candela became judges. Bruce Darnell and Natalie Horler both left after the completion of season 9. There was a trip to Curaçao during the recall. This is the first season in which three women reached the final four and the second season with a female final 2. After nine years, the show produced a female winner, since Elli Erl in season 2. Beatrice Egli won the show as the second female winner.

The twelfth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar was broadcast on German channel RTL from 17 January to 16 May 2015. It was won by Severino Seeger.

Dieter Bohlen returned for his sixteenth series as a judge, while Oana Nechiti, Xavier Naidoo and Pietro Lombardi are the new judges. Oliver Geissen returned for his fifth series as host. The winner was the 20 years old Davin Herbrüggen.

The seventeenth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar began on 4 January 2020 on RTL. As in the previous year, the jury consisted of Dieter Bohlen, Oana Nechiti, Xavier Naidoo and Pietro Lombardi; before the live shows began, Xavier Naidoo was excluded from the jury, his place took Florian Silbereisen. Alexander Klaws was the new host. The season ended on 4 April 2020 with Ramon Roselly as the winner, after having received 80.82% percent from the public.

The eighteenth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar began on 5 January 2021 on RTL. the jury consisted of Dieter Bohlen only for audtitions and "Recalls" Mike Singer, Maite Kelly and Michael Wendler; Wendler was excluded after the first audition because of his statements about the COVID-19 outbreak in Germany. Before the live shows began, Dieter Bohlen was excluded from the jury, his place took Thomas Gottschalk. Oliver Geissen returned as the host. For the first time all top 4 consists of male competitors. Jan Marten-Block was announced as the winner of the season.

The nineteenth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar began on 22 January 2022 on RTL. The jury consisted of Florian Silbereisen, Ilse DeLange and Toby Gad. The contract with Dieter Bohlen as a juror was not extended by RTL and after 18 seasons Bohlen was not in the jury. Marco Schreyl became the new host.
