Burlesque is a musical with a book by Steven Antin, including additional material by Kate Wetherhead, and music and lyrics by Christina Aguilera, Sia, Diane Warren, Todrick Hall, and Jess Folley. It is based on Antin's 2010 film of the same name.
The musical focuses on Ali Rose, an aspiring singer who leaves her small hometown for New York in search for her mother where she becomes a dancer at a burlesque club.
Directed and choreographed by Nick Winston, the original production of Burlesque opened in Manchester at the Manchester Opera House in June and October 2024, and in Glasgow at the Theatre Royal in September of the same year.
On 29 September 2023, it was announced that Steven Antin was writing and producing a stage musical adaptation of his 2010 film Burlesque . Christina Aguilera, who played the lead role in the film, joined the project as a producer. It was also announced that Aguilera, Sia, and Diane Warren returned to rework the songs they wrote for the original film, while Todrick Hall and Jess Folley was in charge of writing new songs. [1]
In November 2023, the musical was officially announced, and producers confirmed that it would have its world premiere in the United Kingdom in 2024. [2]
The musical made its world premiere at the Manchester Opera House in Manchester on 13 June 2024, where it ran until 29 June. The show is scheduled to move to the Theatre Royal in Glasgow from September 11 to 28. It is then scheduled to return to Manchester from 3 October to November. [3]
The show was directed and choreographed by Nick Winston, and produced by Steven Antin, Christina Aguilera, Adam Paulden, Jason Haigh-Ellery, Sue Gilad, and Larry Rogowsky. Ryan-Lee Seager served as an associate director and choreographer, while Antin's sister, Robin Antin also served as an associate choreographer and a creative co-producer. The musical had costumes by Ryan Dawson Leight, scenic design by Soutra Gilmour, lighting by Jack Knowles, and sound by Ben Harrison. [4]
The original cast featured Jess Folley as Ali Rose, Jackie Burns as Tess, George Maguire as Vince, and Todrick Hall as Shaun. [5] [4]

Robin Antin is an American dancer and choreographer. In 1995, she founded the modern burlesque troupe the Pussycat Dolls. By 2005, she diversified into various media including a pop recording group with international hits, a Las Vegas nightclub venue and floor show, various merchandise, and a reality television series. Since then, she has gone on to create other girl groups, including G.R.L., Girlicious and Paradiso Girls.
Chad Beguelin is an American playwright and lyricist. He wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the book for The Prom. He also wrote the book for Disney's Aladdin, as well as additional lyrics for the score. He was nominated for Best Original Book and Best Original Score for Aladdin. He is also known for his collaborations with composer Matthew Sklar, having written the lyrics and co-written the book for the Broadway musical The Wedding Singer and the lyrics for the Broadway musical Elf the Musical. Beguelin was nominated for two Tony Awards for his work on The Wedding Singer, as well as a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics.

Blankenbuehler's other Broadway choreography work includes 9 to 5, Bring it On: The Musical, and the 2016 Cats revival. The film tells the story of Ali (Aguilera), an aspiring singer who leaves her small hometown for Los Angeles, where she becomes a dancer at a struggling burlesque lounge owned by Tess (Cher). After a performance is sabotaged by her rival, Nikki (Bell), Ali sings the song herself, impressing Tess and leading to her becoming the main attraction of the lounge. Burlesque marks Aguilera's first leading role, as well as Cher's first musical performance on screen.
Willie Warde was an English actor, dancer, singer and choreographer. The son of a dancer, his first theatre work was with a dance company. He was engaged to arrange dances for London productions and was later cast as a comic actor in musical theatre. He was associated for over two decades with the Gaiety and Daly's theatres under the management of George Edwardes, playing in and choreographing burlesques and, later, Edwardian musical comedies. In later years he played character roles in West End comic plays.

Burlesque: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is the soundtrack album to the film of the same name, released by Screen Gems, Inc and RCA Records on November 19, 2010. The soundtrack consists of ten songs sung by the film's stars, American singers Christina Aguilera and Cher; Aguilera sang eight of the tracks, while Cher performed the remaining two. The album is inspired by jazz music style, in style with Aguilera's fifth studio album Back to Basics (2006), but contrasting to her then-recent release Bionic (2010), which was recorded concurrently with Burlesque. Burlesque served as Cher's first album since the release of Living Proof nine years earlier.
