Five singles in total were released from the album, including the country number ones "That's the Way" and the McGraw duet "Bring On the Rain", which became a top ten Adult Contemporary hit. Messina's cover of Tina Arena's "Burn", which was included on the soundtrack to the 2001 film Driven, became a number two hit at country radio while reaching the top twenty on adult contemporary. The album also spawned the top five country hit "Downtime" and the number-23 peaking song "Dare to Dream". The album track "Closer" was originally supposed to be the lead single but was scrapped, although a video was made and was later included on Messina's video collection The Video Collection (2002).

The album became a commercial success, debuting at number one on the Top Country Albums and peaking at number 19 on the Billboard 200, becoming her then-highest entry on the latter chart. Burn became Messina's longest-charting album on the former chart, spending 111 weeks in total. As of 2023, the album has been certified Platinum by the RIAA for sales of one million copies.
