Burnt Sugar, also known as Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber, is an American improvisational band. The band's music combines the influences of funk, jazz, rock, reggae, soul, hip hop, heavy metal, and 20th-century classical music. [1] It has been described by one critic as a "funk-rock-electronic-samba-soul-jazz-fusion-whatever ensemble". [2] One critic wrote that Burnt Sugar's music "is not the easiest thing to describe", [3] while another critic wrote that "Burnt Sugar sounds like a big cloud". [4]
Burnt Sugar was founded in 1999 by guitarist and writer Greg Tate. [1] Among the band's influences are Bitches Brew -era Miles Davis, Funkadelic, Bad Brains, Band of Gypsys, Sun Ra, Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi , and Material. [5]
The membership of Burnt Sugar is fluid. As many as 40 musicians have passed through the band and are available to play with it, [6] although the group's core consists of about 12 musicians. [2] Notable musicians who have played with Burnt Sugar include guitarists Pete Cosey, who played in Davis' band during the early 1970s, [7] and Vernon Reid, guitarist for the funk metal band Living Colour. [8] Other members of the group have included pianist Vijay Iyer, saxophonists Avram Fefer, Carl Hancock Rux, Matana Roberts, and trumpeter Lewis "Flip" Barnes. [8]
The founding members of the group—Vijay Iyer and Bruce Mack on keyboards, Rene Akhan, Morgan Craft and Kirk Douglass (now of The Roots) on guitars, Jared Michael Nickerson and Jason Di Matteo on electric and acoustic bass, Swiss Chris and Qasim Naqvi on drums, vocalist Eisa Davis and violinist Simi—began rehearsing together in late August 1999, making their debut at CBGB. In December 1999, they recorded the group's debut album, Blood On The Leaf. [9]
Tate served as Burnt Sugar's leader, using a system called "conduction" to direct the musicians as they improvise. Conduction, which was developed by Butch Morris, is a series of hand and baton signals that cue various musical themes or musicians. [10] Tate said that under conduction, "the band becomes the instrument of the conductor's will." [6] He has described his role as conductor as:

In 2000, Burnt Sugar recorded a three-CD set, That Depends On What You Know, made up of the discs Fubractive Since Antiquity, The Crepescularium and The Sirens Return: Keep It Real ’Til It Flatlines. By that time, the band included trumpeter Lewis “Flip” Barnes, percussionist Tia Nicole Leak, saxophonist Micah Gaugh, flautist Satch Hoyt, cellist Julia Kent, and vocalists Lisala Beatty and Justice Dilla-X. Burnt Sugar’s next studio recording, the two-CD set Black Sex Yall Liberation And Bloody Random Violets, was released in 2004. It featured the band debut of alto saxophonist Matana Roberts and tenor saxophonist Petre Radu-Scafaru. That was followed in 2005 by Not April In Paris, their first live album, documenting a fully improvised 80-minute concert from the Banlieues Bleues Festival in France. In 2006, they released a two-CD live set, If You Can't Dazzle Them With Your Brilliance Then Baffle Them With Your Blisluth, recorded at shows in Bordeaux, France; San Sebastien, Spain; and at Tonic and the Vision Festival in New York City. That same year, the band released another two-CD studio set, More Than Posthuman: Rise Of The Mojosexual Cotillion, which was more focused on vocals, lyrics, and dance rhythms than their previous work. The band finished 2006 by releasing Chopped And Screwed Volume 2 – Rarities, Remixes, Out Takes And Conductions (there was no Volume 1), with excerpts from More Than Posthuman, new collaborations with Butch Morris, and laptop music from Greg Tate’s score for his sci-fi film project Black Body Radiation. In 2007, the group released a best-of collection featuring material from all 12 of their discs, and another live album, Live at Minnegiggle Falls, recorded at Minneapolis’ Walker Arts Center in 2005. In 2008, Burnt Sugar provided a live soundtrack to Oscar Micheaux's silent film In Our Gates at Lincoln Center and released the studio album Making Love To The Dark Ages in partnership with LiveWired Records. In 2011, they released the studio album All Ya Needs That Negrocity.
In 2013, Burnt Sugar contributed several tracks to a benefit album to raise funds for Donovan Drayton's release from prison and forthcoming trial. [11] In 2017, they released their latest studio album, All You Zombies Dig The Luminosity!. In 2019, Burnt Sugar presented the film Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song in Brooklyn while playing their own interpretation of the soundtrack. Van Peebles appeared at the presentation. [12]

For much of his career, Ra led The Arkestra, an ensemble with an ever-changing name and flexible line-up.

Melvin Van Peebles was an American actor, filmmaker, writer, and composer. He worked as an active filmmaker into the early 2020s. His feature film debut, The Story of a Three-Day Pass (1967), was based on his own French-language novel La Permission and was shot in France, as it was difficult for a black American director to get work at the time. The film won an award at the San Francisco International Film Festival which gained him the interest of Hollywood studios, leading to his American feature debut Watermelon Man, in 1970. Eschewing further overtures from Hollywood, he used the successes he had so far to bankroll his work as an independent filmmaker.
Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song is a 1971 American independent blaxploitation action thriller film written, co-produced, scored, edited, directed by, and starring Melvin Van Peebles. His son Mario Van Peebles also appears in a small role, playing the title character as a young boy. The film tells the picaresque story of a poor black man fleeing from the white police authorities.

Vijay Iyer is an American composer, pianist, bandleader, producer and writer based in New York City. The New York Times has called him a "social conscience, multimedia collaborator, system builder, rhapsodist, historical thinker and multicultural gateway". Iyer received a 2013 MacArthur Fellowship, a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a United States Artists Fellowship, a Grammy nomination, and the Alpert Award in the Arts. He was voted Jazz Artist of the Year in the DownBeat magazine international critics' polls in 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2018. In 2014, he received a lifetime appointment as the Franklin D. and Florence Rosenblatt Professor of the Arts at Harvard University, where he was jointly appointed in the Department of Music and the Department of African and African American Studies.
William Holland is an English musician, DJ, and record producer. Holland records under various pseudonyms, including Quantic, the Quantic Soul Orchestra, The Limp Twins, Flowering Inferno, and Ondatrópica. His music features elements of tropical, cumbia, salsa, bossa nova, soul, funk and jazz. Holland plays guitars, bass, double bass, piano, organ, saxophone, accordion and percussion. Much of his sound is original composition, rather than sampling of other artists' material. In addition to his original compositions, he has also produced remixes of over 30 songs.
Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song is the soundtrack to Melvin Van Peebles' 1971 feature film of the same name. The soundtrack was performed by then-unknown Earth, Wind & Fire and released in 1971 on Stax Records. To attract publicity for the film without spending significant money, the soundtrack was released before the movie; it performed well, reaching No. 13 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart.
Sweetback is an English band composed of members from the band Sade, not including the frontwoman Sade Adu. They are a jazz/funk band with R&B overtones. Stuart Matthewman, Paul Denman and Andrew Hale had been recording with female vocalist Sade Adu since 1984.
Melvin Gibbs is an American bass guitarist who has appeared on close to 200 albums in diverse genres of music. Among others, Gibbs is known for working in jazz with drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson and guitarist Sonny Sharrock, and in rock music with Rollins Band and Arto Lindsay.
Avram Fefer is an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and band leader. He has recorded thirteen albums as a leader, many more as a sideman, and has performed in all the major venues of New York, as well as touring throughout Europe, Africa, Japan, and the Middle-East. His latest quartet albums - Testament and Juba Lee - feature guitarist Marc Ribot, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Chad Taylor.

Gregory Stephen Tate was an American writer, musician, and producer. A long-time critic for The Village Voice, Tate focused particularly on African-American music and culture, helping to establish hip-hop as a genre worthy of music criticism. Flyboy in the Buttermilk: Essays on Contemporary America (1992) collected 40 of his works for the Voice and he published a sequel, Flyboy 2, in 2016. A musician himself, he was a founding member of the Black Rock Coalition and the leader of Burnt Sugar.
The Sugarman 3, sometimes titled The Sugarman Three, is a retro-funk band from New York City formed in 1996 by saxophonist Neal Sugarman, Hammond organ player Adam Scone, and drummer Rudy Albin. The band has released four studio albums—Sugar's Boogaloo (1999), Soul Donkey (2000), Pure Cane Sugar (2002) and What the World Needs Now (2012)—and one compilation album, Sweet Spot (2001).

Since 2002 she has been a member of Burnt Sugar Arkestra founded by Greg Tate. She was a member of Melvin Van Peebles' group Wid Laxative.

As a musician, Ersahin has performed and recorded with various musicians as well as his own projects/bands, Wax Poetic, Love Trio, Our Theory, I Led Three Lives, Wonderland and Istanbul Sessions.
The Sun Ra Arkestra is an American jazz group formed in the mid-1950s and led by keyboardist/composer Sun Ra until his death in 1993. The group is considered a pioneer of afrofuturism. Since 1995 the Arkestra has been led by saxophonist Marshall Allen, an Arkestra member since 1958, who is supported by more than a dozen other musicians.
