Bykle Church (Norwegian : Bykle kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Bykle Municipality in Agder county, Norway. It is located in the village of Bykle. It is one of the churches for the Bykle parish which is part of the Otredal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 2004 using plans drawn up by the architect Hans Olaf Aanensen from Arendal. The church seats about 220 people. [1] [2]

History

In the late 20th century, the Old Bykle Church (then known as Bykle Church) was deemed to be too old and small for the local congregation, so a new church building was commissioned. Bishop Olav Skjevesland laid the foundation stone for the new Bykle Church on 1 January 2000. The church was consecrated on 4 September 2004 by Bishop Skjevesland and it was named Bykle Church and the old church was renamed Old Bykle Church. [3]

The cathedral city is Kristiansand, Norway's fifth largest city. Kristiansand Cathedral serves as the seat of the presiding Bishop. The bishop since 2013 has been Stein Reinertsen. Olav Skjevesland

Olav Skjevesland was a Norwegian theologian and priest. He was the Bishop of the Diocese of Agder og Telemark from 1998 until his retirement in 2012, and since that time he was a Bishop Emeritus. He was also the Preses and thus presided over the Bishops' Conference of the Church of Norway from 2006 until 2010. During his time as a bishop, he was considered to be theologically conservative and he was opposed to letting gay priests serve in the church.

It was consecrated on 7 July 1880 by the Bishop Jørgen Moe. This church was built to replace a much older Austad Church that was located in Austad, about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to the southeast, on the other side of the river. The old church was torn down around the same time as the present church was built.
