Cecilia (C.C.) Téllez is a Bolivian distance runner [1] and prominent advocate for LGBTQ civil rights . [2] [3] [4] [5] She openly identifies as a lesbian and hails [6] from La Paz, Bolivia. Téllez graduated from Wissahickon High School in Ambler, Pennsylvania, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, where she was a member of the Bloomsburg University Women's Rugby Club (BUWRFC). She currently resides in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania.
Advocacy and Leadership
C.C. Téllez has made significant contributions to both the LGBTQ+ community and the running world. [7] [8] She is the founder of the Lez Run Running Club. [9] She serves as Co-Race Director and Co-Founder of the Philadelphia Pride Run. An ambassador for Athlete Ally , Téllez actively promotes inclusivity in sports. She previously served as Associate Director of LGBTQ Programming for Students Run Philly Style. [10]
In 2024, she was appointed by the Montgomery County Commissioners to the inaugural Montgomery County Commission on LGBTQIA+ Affairs, a nonpartisan, non-political commission. [11] [12] [13]
Advocacy in Athletics
Téllez’s advocacy has directly impacted inclusivity in competitive running. Her efforts led to the adoption of nonbinary race inclusion and registration with equal prizes in events such as the Philadelphia Distance Run (PDR). After the groundbreaking PDR nonbinary race inclusion, the Blue Cross Broad Street Run, the Philadelphia Marathon , and all seven World Major Marathons , including Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, New York, Tokyo and Sydney followed shortly afterward. The Delaware Valley Legacy Fund (DVLF) honored Téllez with the prestigious Hero Award in recognition of her groundbreaking work in promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion. She joins an esteemed group of past DVLF Hero Award recipients, including The Philadelphia Foundation, GLSEN, Giovanni’s Room, Barbara Gittings and Kay Lahusen, Gloria Casarez, U.S. Representatives Patrick Murphy and Mary Gay Scanlon, philanthropist Mel Heifetz, Olympian Johnny Weir, Admiral Dr. Rachel Levine, and Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell among others. The DVLF praised Téllez’s transformative efforts, stating:
"C.C. has been instrumental in promoting LGBTQ+ acceptance in running. Her efforts toward non-binary inclusion resulted in races adopting more inclusive policies, including the Philadelphia Distance Run, the first public race to offer non-binary race registrations with equal prizes. Since helping to generate this change, in 2022, the Blue Cross Broad Street Run and the Philadelphia Marathon, along with five of the six World Major Marathons—including Boston and Berlin—have adopted the policy." The marathon is a long-distance foot race with a distance of 42km 195m, usually run as a road race, but the distance can be covered on trail routes. Lonah Korlima Chemtai Salpeter is an Israeli Olympic runner. Born in Kenya, she represents Israel internationally. She won the bronze medal in the marathon at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. At the European Athletics Championships in the 10,000 metres, Salpeter won the gold medal in 2018, and earned a bronze medal in 2022. She won the 2020 Tokyo Marathon, won the silver medal at the 2022 New York City Marathon, and finished third at the 2023 Boston Marathon.
Amber Jelena (AJ) Hikes (they/them) is an American civil rights activist and community organizer, who currently serves as the chief equity and inclusion officer for the American Civil Liberties Union. Prior to their work for ACLU, Hikes was most well known for their tenure as executive director of the City of Philadelphia's Office of LGBT Affairs, where they led the More Pride More Color campaign, which developed a version of the Rainbow Flag with black and brown stripes to represent people of color. Hikes, who identifies as a black queer nonbinary woman, emphasizes an intersectional approach towards sexuality, gender, race, and poverty in their advocacy.
Elaine Van Blunk is an American long-distance runner who finished third at the 1994 Chicago Marathon. She was the 1989 winner of the 3000 meters at the USA Track & Field Indoor Championships, and finished seventh in the 10,000 meters event at the 1991 Pan American Games.
The Brooklyn Marathon was a marathon run in Brooklyn, New York City from 2011 to 2022. It was produced by NYCRUNS in the fall. The 2011 debut was centered around Prospect Park. The race generated enough support that plans for new courses began in 2013.
Mason J. Dunn is an American lawyer, educator, and LGBTQ+ rights advocate based in Massachusetts (MA). Dunn is known for their long-standing work in transgender rights and public policy, including co-chairing the "Yes on 3" campaign, which successfully preserved transgender protections in MA's public accommodations law. They currently serve as the Director of Education and Research at the Massachusetts LGBT Chamber of Commerce, where they provide inclusivity training and resources for businesses across the state. Dunn is a nonbinary, trans masculine, and bisexual/queer identifying Jewish person who uses he/him or they/them pronouns.
