The CFL class 4000 is a variant of the Bombardier TRAXX locos found working across Europe. Within Luxembourg they work on the local passenger services (crossing the borders into France or Belgium as necessary. They also work freight traffic. Their 15 kV capability allows them to work across the border to Germany. Even though they are capable of running in France, they are not allowed to do so for security reasons.[ clarification needed ]

Their slab sided body work has been used for advertising.

The 2006 Zoufftgen train collision occurred around 11.45 am on 11 October 2006, near Zoufftgen, Moselle, France, some 20 metres from the border with Luxembourg, on the Metz–Luxembourg railway line. Two trains collided head-on while one track of a double track line was out of service for maintenance. Six people, including the drivers of both trains, were killed: two Luxembourgers and four French. Twenty more were injured in the accident, two seriously.

Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg railway station is a rail station on the CFL Line 10, in the north of Luxembourg City which opened in December 2017. It is located on Rue St Mathieu in the Pfaffenthal valley, below the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge and overlooks the Alzette River. The Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL), the state-owned rail company, operates both it and the accompanying funicular line, which links the station to tram services on the Kirchberg plateau.
