The CMLL World Micro-Estrellas Championship (Campeonato Mundial Micro-Estrellas de CMLL in Spanish) is a professional wrestling championship promoted by the Mexican lucha libre wrestling-based promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL; Spanish for "World Wrestling Council"). The championship is exclusively competed for in the Micro-Estrellas , or Micros, division where all competitors have dwarfism.

The championship was revealed on December 11, 2019. It is the first Mexican-based championship solely for wrestlers with dwarfism. As it is a professional wrestling championship, it is not won legitimately; it is instead won via a scripted ending to a match or awarded to a wrestler because of a storyline. Chamuel was the inaugural champion. He won a six-man torneo cibernetico elimination match on December 25, 2019.

Background

The origins of the Micro-Estrella division lies in midget wrestling, which in Mexico was popularized in the 1970s when promoters used the American concept and had a number of Mexicans with dwarfism, individuals with an adult height of less than 147 centimetres (4 ft 10 in), perform as a "special attraction" on lucha libre shows. In the early days, popular wrestlers included Gran Nikolai, Pequeno Goliath and Arturito. [1] By the 1980s midget wrestling was less popular in Mexico, especially since few new wrestlers had joined the division. [lower-alpha 1] In the early 1990s Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), created a new concept, the Mini-Estrella division. The division was created by Antonio Peña, who worked for CMLL at the time; he came up with the idea of using both wrestlers with dwarfism and wrestlers who were simply very short, and to have those Mini-Estrellas work as smaller versions of popular wrestlers of the time. Peña and CMLL created the CMLL World Mini-Estrella Championship in 1992, which is considered the official birth of the division. [2] CMLL's Mini-Estrellas division featured a number of skilled, high-flying wrestlers, which helped make the concept an immediate success, replacing midget wrestling with the Mini-Estrellas division in Mexico. On April 30, 2017, CMLL began promoting a series of matches for the Micro-Estrellas ("Micro Stars") division, with all competitors being people with dwarfism. In the first match in the new division, Microman and Gallito defeated the team of Mije and Zacarías el Perico. [4] The match even had a micro referee, as would the Micro-Estrella matches going forward. [5] Prior to the match Gallito, Mije and Zacarías had worked as mascotas for various CMLL wrestlers and got physically involved in matches, but they hardly ever wrestled. [6] In subsequent years the Micro-Estrellas became a regular feature on CMLL shows, leading to the first Micro-Estrellas lucha de apuestas , mask vs. mask match between Microman and Chamuel at the CMLL 86th Anniversary Show. In that match, Chamuel lost and was forced to unmask. [7] On the December 11, 2019, Informa show CMLL introduced the CMLL World Micro-Estrellas Championship and unveiled the size-appropriate championship belt. [8] Chamuel was the first CMLL World Micro-Estrellas Champion, having won a six-man torneo cibernetico elimination match on December 25, 2019, to become the inaugural champion. [9] [10]

As with all professional wrestling championships, matches for the CMLL World Micro-Estrellas Championship are not won or lost competitively, but by a pre-planned ending to a match, with the outcome determined by the CMLL bookers and match makers. [lower-alpha 2] On occasion the promotion declares a championship vacant, which means there is no champion at that time. This can either be due to a storyline [lower-alpha 3] or real-life issues such as a champion suffering an injury [lower-alpha 4] or leaving the company. [lower-alpha 5] The championship is the first exclusively for people with dwarfism in Mexico. Similar championships have been promoted in the United States, such as the NWA World Midget's Championship, [lower-alpha 6] and Mini-Estrella championships have been promoted in Mexico since 1992, but those are not exclusively for wrestlers with dwarfism. CMLL held a six-man torneo cibernetico elimination match featuring Microman, Chamuel El Gallito, Zacarías el Perico, Guapito, and Átomo on December 25, 2019 to determine the first CMLL World Micro-Estrellas Champion. The first wrestler eliminated was Átomo, pinned by Zacarías. Eliminations two through four were: Guapito (by El Gallito), Zacarías (by Microman) and El Gallito (by Chamuel). In the end Chamuel pinned longtime rival Microman to win the match and the championship. [9] [10] [17]

Pequeño Olímpico is a Mexican luchador enmascarado, or masked professional wrestler. Pequeño Olímpico is a part of Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre's (CMLL) Mini-Estrella division and holds the record for the longest CMLL World Mini-Estrella Championship reign, with 1,442 days. He has held the title twice. Pequeño Olímpico is Spanish for "Little Olympian", alluding to the fact that he wrestles as a mini version of Olímpico. He previously worked as Cicloncito Ramírez, a mini version of Ciclón Ramirez.

The Mexican National Mini-Estrella Championship, also referred to as the Mexican National Minis Championship, is an inactive professional wrestling championship sanctioned by Comisión de Box y Lucha Libre Mexico D.F.. While the commission sanctioned the title, it did not promote the events at which the championship was defended. Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) promoted the events and had the everyday control of the championship. Mario Pérez Jiménez was a Mexican Mini-Estrella luchador, or Mini professional wrestler, best known under the ring name Espectrito. Jiménez worked for the World Wrestling Federation as "Mini Vader" and "El Torito" between 1997 and 1999. Jiménez was the first ever Mexican National Mini-Estrella Champion and IWC World Mini-Estrella Champion. Jiménez was originally an enmascarado, or masked wrestler, under the Espectrito name but lost it to Mascarita Sagrada in a Luchas de Apuestas match, a bet match where each wrestler puts his mask on the line. The Espectrito ring character is a Mini-version of wrestler Espectro, who was a well-known Luchador from the 1960s-1980s.

The term Mini-Estrella is used in lucha libre to describe a division of short professional wrestlers or luchadors, some of whom have dwarfism. The Mexican Mini-Estrellas are comparable to midget wrestlers who compete internationally, but with the notable exception that some of the Mini-Estrellas do not have dwarfism but are simply short. Some Mini-Estrellas have later on moved on to work as regular sized competitors. The Mini-Estrellas have been featured in several promotions outside Mexico, most notably World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA).

Octagoncito is a Mexican Luchadorenmascarado, or masked professional wrestler, who works in the Mini-Estrellas ("Mini-Stars") division on the Mexican Independent circuit. He is the first wrestler to work as Octagoncito, with Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) giving the same ring character to a second Octagoncito when the original one left the promotion in 1995. Octagoncito's real name is not a matter of public record, as is often the case with masked wrestlers in Mexico where their private lives are kept a secret from the wrestling fans. In addition to working for AAA Octagoncito has also worked for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), Lucha Libre USA, World Wrestling Federation (WWE), World Championship Wrestling (WCW) New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) and a slew of smaller wrestling promotions. Working in the Mini division does not necessarily mean that Octagoncito has dwarfism, as short wrestlers can also work in the "Mini" division.

Martín Rodríguez, better known by the ring name Espantito, was a Mexican luchador enmascarado working in the Mini-Estrella ("Mini-Star") division. Working in the Mini-Estrella division does not automatically mean that Espantito had dwarfism as several wrestlers who are just shorter in stature work in the "Mini" division. As a luchador enmascarado, Espantito's real name was not a matter of public record, but it was revealed upon his death in 2020.

Homenaje a Dos Leyendas (2019) is a major professional wrestling supercard event, produced and scripted by Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre that took place on March 15, 2019. The show, like all of CMLL's major shows took place in Arena México, Mexico City, Mexico, CMLL's home venue. The event was to honor and remember CMLL founder Salvador Lutteroth, who died in March 1987. Starting in 1999 CMLL honored not just their founder during the show, but also a second lucha libre legend, making it their version of a Hall of Fame event. For the 2019 show CMLL commemorated the life and career of wrestler Blue Demon. This was the 21st March show held under the Homenaje a Dos Leyendas name, having previously been known as Homenaje a Salvador Lutteroth from 1996 to 1998.

The CMLL Día de Muertos (2019) is two professional wrestling supercard event, scripted and produced by the Mexican Lucha Libre promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), held to celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead celebration. The shows will take place on November 1 and November 3, 2019 in CMLL's main venue, Arena México, in Mexico City, Mexico. Many of the wrestlers working the shows will wear the traditional Día de Muertos face and body paint for the Día de Muerto event. From around the mid-point of each show the losing wrestlers will be dragged to El Inframundo by a group of wrestlers dressed up as minions of the ruler of the underworld. The event was also billed as "Night of Champions", where the fans decided the opponents of the defending champions at the event. No fans were in attendance at Arena México due to limitations from the COVID-19 pandemic, but the show was broadcast as an internet pay-per-view on Ticketmaster Live.
