Caldicot Castle is an electoral ward in the town of Caldicot, Monmouthshire, Wales. The ward elects councillors to Caldicot Town Council and Monmouthshire County Council.

Description

The Caldicot Castle ward covers the northern corner of the Caldicot community bordered to the north by the A48 road (and Caerwent) and to the east by the community/ward of Portskewett. [1] The eponymous medieval Caldicot Castle and museum is located in the parkland to the southeast of the ward.

According to the 2001 UK Census the population of the Caldicot Castle ward was 1,879, increasing slightly to 1,919 by the 2011 UK Census. [2]

Town Council elections

Castle is a community ward for elections to Caldicot Town Council. The Castle ward elects or co-opts three town councillors to the town council . [3]

A by-election in August 2016, to fill a vacant seat, saw Oliver Edwards win for the Labour Party, replacing Labour councillor Alan Davies. Edwards' father had been a town councillor until 2009. [4]

County Council elections

Caldicot Castle is a county electoral ward, electing one county councillor to Monmouthshire County Council. [5]

The seat was won by the Labour Party at the 1995 and 1999 elections. The 2004 election was won by Plaid Cymru, who retained the seat in 2008. At the 2012 election Labour won the seat back. [6]

At the May 2017 elections, the ward was won by Jo Watkins for the Liberal Democrats, beating the Labour and Conservative candidates in a close race. [7]

Overmonnow Place in Monmouthshire, Wales

Overmonnow is that part of the town of Monmouth, in Wales, which is located to the west of the River Monnow and the Monnow Bridge. It developed as a suburb of the town in the Middle Ages, when it was protected by a defensive ditch, the Clawdd-du or "Black Dyke", the remains of which are now protected as an ancient monument. 2017 Welsh local elections

The 2017 Welsh local elections were held on 4 May 2017 to elect members of all 22 local authorities in Wales. This included the Isle of Anglesey, which was previously up for election in 2013 due to having its elections delayed for a year. Community council elections also took place on the same day. These local elections were held as part of the 2017 local elections in the United Kingdom. Apart from Anglesey, the last elections were held in 2012. Normally these elections take place every four years, but the 2017 elections were postponed for a year in order to avoid clashing with the 2016 Welsh Assembly election, which itself had been postponed by a year to avoid clashing with the 2015 general election.
