West End is an electoral ward in the town of Caldicot, Monmouthshire, Wales. The ward elects councillors to Caldicot Town Council and Monmouthshire County Council.

Caldicot is a town and community in Monmouthshire, southeast Wales, located between Chepstow and Newport on the Gloucester to Newport Line served primarily by Caldicot station, whilst by road it is just off the busy M4 / M48 motorway corridor. The site adjoins the Caldicot Levels, on the north side of the Severn Estuary. Caldicot has easy access on the railway west to Newport, Cardiff Central and east to Chepstow, Lydney, and Gloucester, as well as one stop west to Severn Tunnel Junction and then east via the Severn Tunnel to Filton Abbeywood and Bristol Temple Meads and further afield. Generally good road access to Cardiff and across the Second Severn Crossing, old Severn Bridge to Bristol. The population of the town is around 11,000. It has a large school, Caldicot Comprehensive School, and is known for its medieval castle.

Monmouthshire is a county in south-east Wales. The name derives from the historic county of Monmouthshire of which it covers the eastern 60%. The largest town is Abergavenny. Other towns and large villages are Caldicot, Chepstow, Monmouth, Magor and Usk. It borders Torfaen and Newport to the west; Herefordshire and Gloucestershire to the east; and Powys to the north.

Wales is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It is bordered by England to the east, the Irish Sea to the north and west, and the Bristol Channel to the south. It had a population in 2011 of 3,063,456 and has a total area of 20,779 km² (8,023 sq mi). Wales has over 1,680 miles (2,700 km) of coastline and is largely mountainous with its higher peaks in the north and central areas, including Snowdon, its highest summit. The country lies within the north temperate zone and has a changeable, maritime climate.

Description

The West End ward covers the western corner of the Caldicot community, bordered more-or-less by the B4245 Newport Road and Caldicot by-pass. The ward stretches south to the River Severn. To the west is the community/ward of Rogiet.^[1] The West End ward includes Caldicot railway station.

A community is a division of land in Wales that forms the lowest tier of local government in Wales. Welsh communities are analogous to civil parishes in England. In 2016 there were 870 communities in Wales.

River Severn River in the United Kingdom

The River Severn is the longest river in Great Britain at a length of 220 miles (354 km),. With an average discharge of 107 m³/s (3,800 cu ft/s) at Apperley, Gloucestershire, it has by far the greatest water flow in England and Wales.

Rogiet is a small village and community in Monmouthshire, south east Wales, between Caldicot and Magor, 8 miles (13 km) west of Chepstow and 11 miles (18 km) east of Newport, which covers an area of 847 hectares (3.27 sq mi). It lies close to the M4 and M48 motorways, and the Second Severn Crossing. It has a railway station named Severn Tunnel Junction. Rogiet only has a population of 1,813 (2011).

According to the 2001 UK Census the population of the West End ward was 1,918, increasing slightly to 1,944 by the 2011 UK Census.^[2]

In 2014 plans for 82 new houses on 12 acres of neglected brownfield land next to the mainline railway were rejected by the County Council planning committee.^[3]

In urban planning, brownfield land is any previously developed land that is not currently in use, whether contaminated or not. The term is also used to describe land previously used for industrial or commercial purposes with known or suspected pollution including soil contamination due to hazardous waste.

Town Council elections

Castle is a community ward for elections to Caldicot Town Council. The Castle ward elects or co-opts three town councillors to the town council.^[4]

Labour Party councillor and former mayor, Elaine Davies, died in office from cancer in February 2008, after 12 years in office.^[5]

County Council elections

West End is a county electoral ward, electing one county councillor to Monmouthshire County Council.^[6]

The seat was won by the Labour Party at the 1995 and 1999 elections. The 2004 election was won by an Independent candidate, but returned to Labour at the 2012 election.^[7]

At the May 2017 elections, the ward was retained by Cllr Dave Evans, beating the Independent and Conservative candidates.^[8] Evans had won the elections in 2008 and 2012.^[7]
