Calm with Horses is a 2019 Irish crime drama film directed by Nick Rowland in his feature debut, and written by Joseph Murtagh. It concerns an ex-boxer who works as an enforcer for a criminal family in rural Ireland while providing for his autistic son. The film stars Cosmo Jarvis, Barry Keoghan, Niamh Algar, Ned Dennehy, Kiljan Moroney and David Wilmot. It is adapted from the short story of the same name from the collection "Young Skins" by Colin Barrett. The film was released in the United States under the title The Shadow of Violence. [3]

It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 8 September 2019. It was released in Ireland on 13 March 2020 by Altitude Film Distribution.

Production

In April 2018, it was announced Cosmo Jarvis, Barry Keoghan and Niamh Algar had joined the cast of the film, with Nick Rowland directing from a screenplay by Joseph Murtagh. Michael Fassbender served as an executive producer via his DMC Film banner. [4]

Release

The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 8 September 2019. [5] It was released in Ireland on 13 March 2020 by Altitude Film Distribution. [6] Saban Films acquired U.S. distribution rights to the film and named it The Shadow Of Violence [1] [2] in the U.S. [7] With this title, it was released on VOD by Lionsgate Home Entertainment on 1 September 2020. Critical response

94% of the 69 reviews compiled on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes are positive, with an average of 7.5/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Calm with Horses presents a grimly effective portrait of one man's struggle with divided loyalties, elevated by standout performances from a stellar cast." [2] On Metacritic, the film holds a rating of 67 out of 100, based on 14 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [8]

The 16th Irish Film & Television Academy Awards took place on 18 October 2020. Because no ceremony was held in 2019, this ceremony honoured films and television drama released in both 2018 and 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no physical ceremony took place; instead, there was a "virtual ceremony" hosted by Deirdre O’Kane.

For the first and second Irish Film and Television Awards ceremonies, supporting performances for film and television were combined into one category. Up until the 2018–2019 film season, awards were given for films released in Ireland the previous year.

Colin Barrett is an Irish Canadian writer, published since 2009. He started his career with the 2009 publication of Let's Go Kill Ourselves in The Stinging Fly. Barrett released one novella and six short stories with Young Skins in 2013. He released an additional eight short stories with Homesickness in 2022.

The 20th Irish Film & Television Academy Awards, also called the IFTA Film & Drama Awards 2024 or the 21st Anniversary IFTA Awards, took place on 20 April 2024. The ceremony was hosted by Baz Ashmawy at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre. It honoured Irish films and television drama released between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2023. The nominations were announced on 14 March 2024. The Rising Star nominees were announced on 9 April 2024.
