Hazel Doupe (born 12 November 2001) is an Irish actress. She is best known for her breakthrough role as Frances in the 2018 coming-of-age film Float Like a Butterfly . [1]

Early life

Doupe was born in Dublin.

Career

Doupe started her career as a guest star in the episode "Shot Down" of the second series of the TV3 drama series Jack Taylor . [2] In 2015, Doupe starred as Wendy Darling/Lucy Rose in the modern day television adaption of Peter Pan, which was broadcast on 26 December 2015 on ITV. [3] In 2017, she starred in Michael Inside . [4]

She is best known for her role as Frances, an Irish Traveller teen who idolises boxing legend Muhammad Ali and trains herself to become a boxer in the 2018 film Float Like a Butterfly , which premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. [5] On portraying her character in the film, Doupe explained that "The main concern of mine was, it wasn't solely to be amazing in this performance, it wasn't to be good, it was to be true to the character, to present her in a realistic way, my priority was to portray her as a real hero and it's so different to the heroes we see on screen." [6]

In 2021, Doupe portrayed Ingrid in the RTÉ One thriller drama series Smother , which also starred Dervla Kirwan, Niamh Walsh, Seána Kerslake and Gemma-Leah Devereux. [7] In an interview with Entertainment.ie, regards of her casting in the series, Doupe stated:

It was very apparent in the script that Ingrid was really mature and self-assured for her age - she's only 16. To me, she had a lot more life experience than a 16-year-old character in any other script that I had seen would have. [8]

Doupe starred in You Are Not My Mother [9] and The Ulysses Project.

She is the voice of Melinda in the Adult Swim series Unicorn: Warriors Eternal . [10]

Float Like a Butterfly is an Irish drama film, directed by Carmel Winters and released in 2018. The film stars Hazel Doupe as Frances, a young Irish Traveller girl who idolizes Muhammad Ali and aspires to become a boxer.

Smother is an Irish thriller drama television series written by Kate O'Riordan and directed by Dathaí Keane. The series is produced by BBC Studios and Treasure Entertainment for Raidió Teilifís Éireann, and premiered on 7 March 2021 on RTÉ One. A second series was announced in April 2021 and had its premiere on RTÉ One on 9 January 2022. It aired in the UK by Alibi in June 2021. The show then premiered on Peacock in the US on July 1, 2021. The second season premiered on April 28, 2022. The series airs in Norway on TV2. In August 2022, it was confirmed that the series would end at the end of the third season. The third and final series began airing on 6 February 2023.
