Calon FM is a community radio station serving Wrexham and surrounding areas. [1]

The station is owned and operated by Wrexham Community Broadcasting and broadcasts from studios at the Wrexham Enterprise Hub in the town centre with its transmitter atop Tŷ Pawb. [2]

Calon FM was first launched as a RSL radio station, originally covering events at the 2005 Wrexham Science Festival on 87.7FM. [3] In 2006, the station was granted a 5-year community radio licence. The station officially launched on Saturday 1 March 2008 on 105FM in Wrexham after a short period of test transmissions.

Calon FM was based on the campus of Glyndŵr University on Mold Road, initially based above a recording studio before moving into the Centre for Creative Industries (CCI). Currently, they are based out of the Wrexham Enterprise Hub.

Calon FM's output consists of music, features, sport, talk and specialist programming produced and presented by volunteers. The station also aired weekly programming in Welsh and other languages. [4] [5]

Asides its primary transmission area, the station can also be heard through much of the central areas of Wrexham County Borough, and parts of southern Flintshire.

In August 2017, Calon FM began carrying live commentaries on Wrexham A.F.C. matches throughout the football season [6] The station's live coverage ended after two seasons. [7]

In its original incarnation, Calon FM also won a number of industry awards, including the Wales category in the Radio Academy Nations and Regions Awards twice in a row, in 2013 and 2014. [8]

Temporary closure and revival

On 31 December 2020, it was reported Calon FM would close, following a decision by Glyndŵr University to withdraw its support. The university provided funding and studio facilities to the station since its launch. [9]

In a statement, directors said the long-term financial position of the station's owners, Calon Communications Ltd, was left untenable as a result of the withdrawal, despite being able to raise additional income through advertising and sponsorship. [10]

A Glyndwr University spokesperson said it had spent more than £1 million on staff, equipment and indirect costs for studios and professional services. [11]

In a later statement, the station's volunteers criticised the board of directors for the decision and announced they were forming a rescue plan to retain the FM licence and resume broadcasting. [12]

Calon FM ceased broadcasting at midday on Wednesday 20 January 2021.

Following a tender process involving three separate groups, the station's assets were handed over to its volunteer staff, who intend to relaunch the Calon service under the ownership of a new community interest company, 'Wrexham Community Broadcasting'. [13] The group launched a campaign to secure funds to resume broadcasting. [14]

On 8 October 2021, Calon FM announced it had resumed broadcasting after the original licence was transferred by OFCOM to the station's new owners. Test transmissions, including some presenter-led programming, were broadcast ahead of a soft launch of the station on Monday 11 October 2021. [15]

Wrexham Community Broadcasting is also part of Wrexham DAB Ltd, a consortium which applied for a small-scale DAB multiplex in its broadcast area. [16]

It was the only applicant in North Wales when bidding closed, [17] and in May 2022, OFCOM announced the consortium had been awarded a SS-DAB licence. [18]

DAB broadcasts since April 2021 are now restricted to unlicensed, low powered multiplexes in a small number of locations.

Moorlands Radio Radio station in Leek

Moorlands Radio is a community radio station based in Leek in the Staffordshire Moorlands, England. It was granted the full-time licence in the second round of community radio licensing by broadcast regulator Ofcom in February 2008. The station serves the rural Staffordshire Moorlands, covering the main towns of Leek and Biddulph.

GHR Hull & East Yorkshire, Formerly KCFM, is an Independent Local Radio station serving Kingston upon Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. This new licence was advertised by Ofcom in 2006.

Digital radio in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, the roll-out of digital radio has been proceeding since engineering test transmissions were started by the BBC in 1990 followed by a public launch in September 1995. The UK currently has one of the world's biggest digital radio networks, with about 500 transmitters, three national DAB ensembles and 48 local and regional DAB ensembles broadcasting over 250 commercial and 34 BBC radio stations across the UK. In London there are already more than 100 different digital stations available. In addition to DAB and DAB+, radio stations are also broadcast on digital television platform as well as internet radio in the UK. Digital radio ensemble operators and stations need a broadcasting licence from the UK's media regulator Ofcom to broadcast.

Swindon FM Radio station

Swindon FM was a local DAB radio station broadcasting to the English town of Swindon between 2003 and 2006, after making two trial FM broadcasts in 2001 and 2002. The station stopped broadcasting in May 2006.

In the United Kingdom, Community Radio refers to a system of licensing small, micro-local, non-profit radio stations, which started in 2002. In its early days, the pilot scheme was known as Access Radio. New legislation paved the way for this additional tier of radio, starting in 2005, and hundreds of community stations have since been set up. Unlike commercial radio licensing, which is generally advertised to cover a specific region, community radio stations are usually limited to broadcast areas smaller than commercial or BBC local stations, nominally within a 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) radius of their transmitter.

Nation Radio Wales Radio station

Nation Radio Wales is a regional radio station, broadcasting to south and west Wales on FM and across Wales on DAB. It is owned and operated by Nation Broadcasting and broadcasts from studios near the St Hilary transmitter on the outskirts of Cowbridge.

Storeton transmitting station

Storeton transmitting station is a television transmitter being a member of both the Winter Hill group of transmitters and of the Moel-y-Parc group of transmitter, and an FM radio transmitter, with transmitting antennas affixed to a mast located on Storeton Ridge, Higher Bebington, Wirral, UK. The site is owned and operated by Arqiva. It was originally solely an analogue TV relay of the Winter Hill transmitter and the only Winter Hill relay to carry all five analogue TV channels prior to digital switchover. The 45 metre-high (150 ft-high) mast is situated at an elevation of 65.5 metres (215 ft). Thus, the top of the mast has an overall height of 110.5 metres (363 ft) above sea level. Construction of the mast was completed in 1980. As of 2009, the TV transmitter serves approximately 45,000 homes.

XS Manchester Radio station in Manchester

XS Manchester is an Independent Local Radio station serving Greater Manchester, broadcasting a mix of peak-time news, rock music and talk output. The station is owned and operated by Communicorp UK and broadcasts from studios at studios at Spinningfields in Manchester.

Radio Wirral was an Independent Local Radio Station serving Liverpool, the Wirral Peninsula, the North West, North Wales and West Cheshire.

MuxCo is an operator of digital radio in the United Kingdom. It is, in joint ventures, the licensee for local DAB ensembles in various parts of England and Wales. The company is owned by Arqiva, Bauer Radio and Folder Media. .Despite having had several licences since 2008, it did not launch any services until 2013.

Smooth Wales Radio station

Smooth Wales is an Independent Local Radio station broadcasting to the Cardiff area of South Wales and to the Wrexham area of North Wales, as well as parts of Cheshire in England. All programming content is now shared to both areas. It is the only AM station in the Smooth radio network to have its own content, a local four-hour weekday show, as all other Smooth AM stations, as added to the network in 2014, carry the London network FM content, opting out only for local news and advertising breaks. The local show on Smooth Wales was carried over from the station's previous incarnation as Gold.
