Cambodia Airlines was an airline in Cambodia owned by The Royal Group [1] and PAL Holdings, Inc. of the Philippines. As of September 2022, the airline is no longer operating. [2]

History

Cambodia Airlines was founded in 1997 but its operations ceased in 2005. [3]

In 2013, Philippine's flag carrier, Philippine Airlines, formed a joint venture [4] with The Royal Group of Cambodia by buying a 49% stake in Cambodia Airlines. San Miguel Corporation, a diversified conglomerate in the Philippines, bought a stake in PAL Holdings, Inc. and took control of the management of Philippine Airlines from the Lucio Tan group. The Royal Group of Cambodia owned 100% of Cambodia Airlines before the joint venture. Operations between Manila and Phnom Penh were expected to begin in June 2013 while international flights were set to start in October the same year.[ citation needed ]

Fleet

Cambodia Airlines initially leased two Airbus A320 for international flights and two Bombardier Dash 8 for domestic.[ citation needed ]

It is named, like the province itself, after King Norodom Sihanouk. The airport is also known as Kang Keng Airport. The IATA code KOS is derived from Sihanoukville's alternative name "Kampong Som".

Progress Multi Trade Air Flight 241 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The flight was operated by regional airliner PMTair using an Antonov An-24. On 25 June 2007, the Antonov An-24, registered as XU-U4A, disappeared over the Cambodian jungle near Bokor Mountain in Kampot while on approach to Sihanoukville. A massive search and rescue operation ensued with thousands of soldiers and police scoured the area. The aircraft was found to have crashed in southwestern Cambodia, northeast of Dâmrei Mountains. All 22 people on board, most of whom were South Korean tourists, were killed. It remains as the second deadliest air disaster in Cambodian history.

Kith Meng is a Cambodian businessman. He is the chairman and CEO of The Royal Group which counts among its holdings 45% of J Trust Royal Bank, the mobile phone operator Cellcard and 100% of Royal Railways. Meng also owns 100% stake in Cambodia's television and telecommunications networks CBS, Hydro Power Lower Sesan 2, a 400MW plant, Chailease Royal Leasing and Chailease Royal Finance in partnership with Chailease of Taiwan, Cambodian Broadcasting Corporation and CamGSM. Meng is known for his preference for entering Cambodian companies into joint ventures with international companies. He is sometimes referred to in the press by the nickname "Mr. Rough Stuff" after a leaked US diplomatic cable using that nickname alleged his involvement in criminality and corruption.

The airline was a wholly owned subsidiary of Bayon Airlines Holding Ltd., which was in turn a subsidiary of the Chinese carrier Joy Air. It was registered in April 2014. The air operator's certificate was received in December 2014; the airline had its inaugural flight on December 31, 2014. Cambodia Bayon Airlines' first operational base in Cambodia was Phnom Penh. AirAsia Cambodia is a Cambodian low-cost airline based at Phnom Penh International Airport. It is a joint venture between the Malaysian AirAsia and Cambodian local enterprise Sivilai Asia. The airline was launched on 9 December 2022 and started operations on 2 May 2024. Cambodia is the fifth country in Southeast Asia that Capital A established AirAsia brand.
