The Campeonato Carioca de Futebol Feminino (Carioca Women's Football Championship), organized by the Rio de Janeiro State Football Federation (FFERJ), is the women's football state championship of Rio de Janeiro State. It has contested since 1983.
The four most important Rio de Janeiro men's football teams (Vasco da Gama, Flamengo, Botafogo and Fluminense) contested in all editions of the competition between 1996 and 2000. In 2006, the four most important Rio de Janeiro clubs did not dispute the competition, and in 2007 only Botafogo participated in the competition.
Two unofficial competitions were also contested, Torneio de Rio das Ostras (Rio das Ostras Tournament), which had Flamengo as the champion of the only edition disputed, in 1999, and Torneio Início (Start Tournament), which had Vasco da Gama winning in 1999 and 2000, the only editions of the tournament.

Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, commonly referred to as Vasco da Gama or simply Vasco, is a sports club based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Although originally a rowing club and then a multi-sport club, Vasco is mostly known for its men's football team, which currently competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the top tier of the Brazilian football league system, and in the Campeonato Carioca, the state of Rio de Janeiro's premier state league.

The Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa, also known as Taça de Prata, or nicknamed Robertão, was an association football competition contested in Brazil between 1967 and 1970 among soccer teams from São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais and Paraná states. It was an important soccer tournament, being considered a predecessor to the Brazilian Championship induced in 1971. Thus in 2010 the Brazilian Football Confederation decided to consider the winners of the Robertão as Brazilian champions. The 1st edition of the tournament was organized by Federação de Futebol do Estado do Rio de Janeiro and Federação Paulista de Futebol.
Bangu Atlético Clube, commonly known as Bangu, is a Brazilian professional association football club based in Rio de Janeiro, in the western neighbourhood of Bangu. The Taça da Prefeitura do Distrito Federal, commonly also Torneio Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, was a tournament for clubs of the then capital of Brazil Rio de Janeiro which was held for the first time in 1938 and which took place annually from 1943 to 1948. The last edition was in 1951. In 1996 the competition was revived for one more time as Taça Cidade Maravilhosa, the "Cup of the Marvellous City", after the byname of Rio de Janeiro. The importance of the tournament is subordinate and it always remained in the shadow of the state championship known as Campeonato Carioca.

The 1981 football season is Clube de Regatas do Flamengo's 86th year of existence, their 70th football season, and their 69th season in the top division of the Campeonato Carioca, the Rio de Janeiro state football league. In addition, it is their 11th in the top division of the Brazilian national football league, having never been relegated from either. Internationally, Flamengo participated in the 1981 Copa Libertadores, qualifying through winning the 1980 Brazilian Série A Championship.

Founded in 1995, the team is affiliated with FFERJ and play their home games at Estádio da Gávea. The team colors, reflected in their logo and uniform, are red and black. They play in the top tier of women's football in Brazil, the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol Feminino, and in the Campeonato Carioca de Futebol Feminino, the first division of the traditional in-state competition. Their players belong to the Brazilian Navy, which has formed a partnership with the team in 2015.

Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, commonly known as Vasco da Gama or simply Vasco, is a women's association football club based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Founded in 1923, the team has been inactive for periods prior to its most recent reinstatement in 2016. The team is affiliated with Federação de Futebol do Estado do Rio de Janeiro and play their home games at São Januário. The team colors, reflected in their logo and uniform, are white and black. They play in the third tier of women's football in Brazil, the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol Feminino Série A3, and in the Campeonato Carioca de Futebol Feminino, the traditional in-state competition.
The 1940 Torneio Rio São Paulo was the 3rd edition of the Torneio Rio-São Paulo. It was disputed between 16 June to 22 September. The tournament was ended after the finish of the first half due to financial issues of Botafogo, Flamengo and Vasco da Gama. Due to the popularity of the Campeonato Brasileiro de Seleções Estaduais at the time, clubs from São Paulo also agreed to end the tournament. The competition was interrupted with Flamengo and Fluminense in the lead, without the CBD making the title official, however, the clubs and newspapers at the time considered the result definitive and declared the Flamengo and Fluminense as the legitimate champions of the competition. Both clubs currently consider themselves champions of the competition and include this title among their achievements.
The Clássico Vovô is the name given to Botafogo and Fluminense association football derby, both teams from the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the oldest rivalry among the major clubs in Brazil, and the third oldest in the Americas.
