Canacona (/'kaːɳkɔɳ/; Goan Konkani : काणकोण, kāṇkŏṇ) is a city and a municipal council in the district of South Goa, Goa state, India. Canacona taluka includes Patnem, Chaudi, Poinguinim, Loliem-Polem, Agonda, and Gaumdongre. Chaudi is the headquarters and the most developed town in this taluka. The famous Palolem Beach is located in Canacona. [1]

Geography

Canacona is located at 15°01′N74°01′E / 15.02°N 74.02°E / 15.02; 74.02 . [2] It has an average elevation of 10 metres (32 feet). Canacona is the southernmost taluka of Goa.

History

The historical name of Canacona is "Kanvapura"

Education

Dnyna Prabodhini Mandal's Shree Mallikarjun College of Arts & Commerce located at Delem Canacona Goa. Affiliated to Goa University, is the prime educational institute of this taluka catering to higher educational needs of the area. There are two higher Secondaries in Canacona. [3]

One of the two JNV institutions in Goa; Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Canacona is also situated in Delem, Canacona.

The taluka also includes Centro Promotor De Instrucao primary school, which later got the extensions Shri Mallikarjun High School and Shri Mallikarjun Higher Secondary.


Demographics

As of 2011 India census, [4] Canacona city had a population of 12,434. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Canacona has an average literacy rate of 89.31%, higher than the national average of 74.04%; with male literacy of 93.09% and female literacy of 85.47%. 10% of the population is under 6 years of age. In addition to Konkani, Marathi is also spoken here by a minority.

Canacona is part of Canacona (Goa Assembly constituency) and South Goa (Lok Sabha constituency).

Kudal is a census town in Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra, India. It is situated on River Karli in southwest Maharashtara. Kudal is the fourth largest town in Sindhudurg after Sawantwadi, Malvan and Kankavli. As of 2011, the population is 16,015. Kudal supports one MIDC area in the Konkan division. The Kudal railway station is located on the Konkan Railway route and connects the town with Mumbai metro situated in the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway of the north, and Mangalore on the south. It is a major stop for the Konkan Railway. The Deccan Odyssey train also stops in Kudal. National Highway 66 passes through Kudal. Apart from that, it also has two bus stations, a new one and old one. The old one is situated in market while the new one is just adjacent to the NH-66. Kudal is situated in centre of the Sindhudurg district and also considered one of the fastest-growing towns in the Konkan region. The Desai's were the original rulers of Kudal, who were tributaries of the Bijapur Sultanate, later the Marathas and then under the British.
