The 1936 official Olympic Report has the silver medalists listed as Josef Kampfl and Alois Edeltitsch, but information from Olympisch Enzyklopaedie(in German), the Austrian Olympic Committee, and from Volker Kluge's Olympia Chronik(in German) all confirm that the actual silver medalists were Weinstabl and Proisl.

Prior to those games, Merkov was subjected to controversy for failing a doping test in Bulgaria which led to over a dozen canoeing nations petitioning the International Canoe Federation for an investigation, only to have Bulgarian officials stonewall on his behalf to compete. He would later refuse to attend the post-race press conference of K-1 1000 m in the wake of those allegations.

Daniele Scarpa is an Italian sprint canoer who competed from the mid-1980s to 1997. Competing in four Summer Olympics, he won two medals at Atlanta in 1996 with a gold in the K-2 1000 m and a silver in the K-2 500 m events.

Canoeing at the 1936 Summer Olympics

Canoeing was an official Olympic sport for the first time at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. It had been a demonstration sport twelve years earlier at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. A total of nine events were contested at the 1936 Games, all in canoe sprint for men. In total, 158 canoeists from 19 nations took part in the canoe races. All these countries had sent in entries before the deadline, the only late entry came from Latvia, which was as a result excluded from participating in the canoeing competitions.

Olaf Heukrodt is an East German-German canoer who from the late 1970s to the early 1990s.

Jörg Schmidt is an East German sprint canoer who competed in the 1980s. He won a silver medal in the C-1 1000 m event at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.

Philippe Renaud is a French sprint canoer who competed during the 1980s. Competing in two Summer Olympics, he won a bronze in the C-2 500 m event at Seoul in 1988.

Katrin Borchert is an East German-born Australian sprint canoeist who competed from the late 1980s to 2001. Competing in three Summer Olympics, she won three medals with one silver and two bronzes. During her career, she has represented four countries: East Germany, then West Germany, then Germany followed by Australia.

Gregor Hradetzky was an Austrian canoeist and organ builder who competed in the late 1930s.

Jan Brzák-Felix was a Czechoslovak slalom and sprint canoeist from Prague who competed from the mid-1930s to the early 1950s. Competing in three Summer Olympics, he won three medals in the C-2 1000 m event with two golds and one silver (1952).

Detlef Hofmann German sprint canoeist (born 1963)

Detlef Hofmann is a German sprint canoeist who competed from the late 1980s to the late 1990s. He won a gold medal in the K-4 1000 m event at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

Toni Merkens German cyclist

Nikolaus Anton "Toni" Merkens was a racing cyclist from Germany and Olympic champion. He represented his native country at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, where he won the gold medal in the men's 1000 meter match sprint event.

Bohuslav Karlík was a Czechoslovak flatwater and slalom canoeist who competed from the late 1930s to the early 1950s. Competing in two Summer Olympics, he won the silver in the C-1 1000 m event at Berlin in 1936.

Milan Janić was a Serbian sprint canoeist who competed from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s for Yugoslavia. Competing in two Summer Olympics, he won a silver medal in the K-1 1000 m event at Los Angeles in 1984.

Marcel Renaud was a French sprint and slalom canoeist who competed in the 1940s and the 1950s. Competing in two Summer Olympics, he won a silver medal in the C-2 10000 m event at Melbourne in 1956. Renaud also won a bronze medal in the K-4 1000 m at the 1954 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships at Mâcon. In canoe slalom, he won a gold medal in the C-1 team event at the 1949 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in Geneva.
