Canvas is the fifth Korean extended play by South Korean boy group NU'EST. It was released on August 29, 2016 by Pledis Entertainment and distributed by Loen Entertainment. The extended play features five original tracks.
On August 20, 2016, NU'EST released a series of individual teaser images, along with a group image. [1] The following days, individual teaser videos and the official teaser were revealed, following with a highlight medley. [2] [3] The full music video for the title track "Love Paint" was released on August 29, 2016. "Daybreak" was released as a digital single on October 6, 2016 along with a music video. [4]
Canvas is a continuation of the narrative that began with the extended play Q is released earlier in 2016, with the sentences "Winter is gone", "But still missing", and "Waiting Q" appearing in the teaser video. [3] The album was made on the concept of "24 hours in a day", where each track of the song corresponds to a specific time in the day.
"Daybreak", a duet between Minhyun and JR, is a medium-tempo soul R&B song mixed with a jazz groove representing the dawn and was written to give both "sad and hopeful feelings" at the same time. [5] Minhyun and JR both wrote the lyrics during the dawn. [6]
"R.L.T.L." represents morning, with bird chirps in the intro. "Thank You" was written as a message of gratitude to NU'EST's fans, and "Look" is a fast-tempo song conveying the "lively and active feeling of the night." [5]
The title track for Canvas, "Love Paint", was produced by Mafly and Bumzu, fusing future bass and R&B with a classical orchestra sound. The song represents the afternoon. [5]
Canvas debuted at #3 at Gaon Weekly Music Chart and #12 at Gaon Social Chart. [7] Initial album sales were poor upon release, selling only 6,359 copies. [8] Following NU'EST's appearance on Produce 101 Season 2 , Canvas re-entered the Gaon Weekly Music Chart at #54 with the group's other four albums. [9] By September 2017, the album had sold an additional 19,742 copies. [10]
The album also peaked at #12 on the US Billboard World Albums Chart. [11]

Pledis Entertainment is a South Korean entertainment company founded by Han Sung-Soo in 2007. The label is home to actress Nana, Hwang Min-hyun, Baekho, and K-pop groups Seventeen, Fromis 9 and TWS. Its name originates from the Pleiades, a star cluster in the constellation Taurus.
NU'EST was a South Korean boy band formed and managed by Pledis Entertainment. The group consisted of five members: JR, Aron, Baekho, Minhyun and Ren. They debuted on March 15, 2012, with the single titled "Face". The group disbanded on March 15, 2022, after Aron, JR, and Ren left Pledis Entertainment upon the completion of their 10-year contract.

As NU'EST and Hello Venus hadn't officially debuted then, the album doesn't include all the members of the two groups, and NU'EST went by the name "Pledis Boys". Pristin was a South Korean girl group formed by Pledis Entertainment in 2016. The group was composed of ten members: Nayoung, Roa, Yuha, Eunwoo, Rena, Kyulkyung, Yehana, Sungyeon, Xiyeon, and Kyla. Most of them appeared on the television show Produce 101 and, as the prize for becoming two of the top contestants, Nayoung and Kyulkyung went on to debut as part of the project girl group I.O.I, before reuniting with the other members to debut as Pristin on March 21, 2017, with the first EP Hi! Pristin. Pristin was known for writing and composing their own music. After nearly a year and a half without activity, the group disbanded on May 24, 2019 when only 3 of the 10 members renewed their contract with Pledis Entertainment.
Hwang Min-hyun, known mononymously as Minhyun, is a South Korean singer, songwriter and actor. He began his professional career in 2012 as a lead vocalist of the South Korean boy group NU'EST. In 2017, he participated in second season of Produce 101 and finished ninth place, becoming a member of Wanna One. Following Wanna One's disbandment, Hwang re-joined NU'EST, remaining in the group until its disbandment in 2022. He is currently a solo artist and actor signed under Pledis Entertainment.
Kang Dong-ho, known professionally as Baekho (Korean: 백호), is a South Korean singer, songwriter, record producer and television personality currently signed under Pledis Entertainment. He is the former main vocalist and music producer of South Korean boy group NU'EST.
NU'EST W was the second sub-unit of South Korean boy band NU'EST. The group consisted of NU'EST members: JR, Aron, Baekho, and Ren, promoting in the absence of Minhyun, who at the time was promoting with Wanna One. The group disbanded following the return of Minhyun on December 31, 2018.
