Carlton McCarthy, known mononymously as Carlton, is a singer and songwriter from Bristol, England. [1] He is known for singing on Massive Attack's debut single "Any Love" (1987), also the first production by Smith & Mighty. [1] [2] It was later named one of Smith & Mighty's best productions by Fact . [3]

In 1991, he released his own album, the Smith & Mighty-produced The Call Is Strong , later included by Fact in their list of the 1990s' greatest albums, [4] and considered one of the finest albums of the Bristol underground scene. [5] Three singles reached the UK Singles Chart; "Do You Dream" at number 81, "Cool with Nature" at number 90 in August and "Love and Pain" at number 56. [6] In 1995, Bomb the Bass collaborated with Carlton on their single "1 to 1 Religion". [7] [8] Found on the former album's Clear , [9] it reached number 53 on the UK Singles Chart in March 1995. [10] He released the single "Lovetime" on 4 November 1996. [11] In 1999, he collaborated with speed garage act Serious Danger on "Do U Dream". [12]

The original version of "Everlasting Love" was recorded by Knight in Nashville, with Cason and Gayden aiming to produce it in a Motown style reminiscent of the Four Tops and the Temptations. Smith & Mighty are an English trip hop group from Bristol, England, consisting of Rob Smith and Ray Mighty. Their first releases, in the late 1980s, were breakbeat covers of "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and "Walk On By". Both songs entered the UK Singles Chart. Their work was associated with the Bristol sound, a precursor to trip hop.

Now Is Early is the debut studio album by Scottish singer Nicolette, produced by English electronic duo Shut Up and Dance and released in April 1992 by the duo's label of the same name. It follows a string of popular underground singles in the early 1990s that applied the singer's jazz-styled vocals to Shut Up and Dance's early experiments in breakbeat hardcore, with songs from these singles featuring on the record. Stylistically, the record profiles Shut Up and Dance's spacious, breakbeat-driven sound, contrasted with Nicolette's smooth scat-style singing. Bass Is Maternal is the debut studio album by Bristolian production duo Smith & Mighty, originally released by More Rockers in 1995. The album was originally recorded in 1989 for ffrr/London Records, who had signed the duo after they had built up underground success in their native city for their innovative Bristol underground scene sound, but the labels deemed the record unsuitable for release. The record explores links between dub music and British rave culture, incorporating styles of rock, reggae and electronic music with an emphasis on dub-style bass. Produced by Smith & Mighty, the album explores a relaxed style of soul and dance music flavoured by reggae, hip hop and house, featuring prominent electronic beats and sine bass, while Carlton sings love songs in falsetto. Recording sessions in London were fractious due to creative disagreements between Smith & Mighty and the label.
