Carmen Farmer (born December 4, 1980) [1] is an American rugby player and attorney. In 2016, she was named to the United States women's national rugby union team for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Early life

Farmer grew up in Richmond, Virginia. [2] As a high school student, she played softball, volleyball, and basketball. [2] Farmer attended the Virginia Tech where she received a full scholarship for softball. [3] She was the starting shortstop on the team from 2000 through 2003. [3]

Career

After college, Farmer attended law school at the University of Maryland, graduating in 2006. [3] She then worked as an attorney for the non-profit Eastern Shore Land Conservancy. [3]

Rugby player

Farmer started playing rugby at age 31 after a friend from Australia recommended she try the sport. [3] Farmer decided to try the sport for fun and found the closest rugby club to where she lived, located in Annapolis, Maryland. [3] In 2012, she began playing 15 player rugby at Severn River in Maryland. [3] The Severn River team reached the national championship game that year where a national team coach approached Farmer. [3] Farmer played her first game for a United States national team in 2013. [2]

By 2014 Farmer was playing rugby sevens and had progressed enough to play for the United States in the World Cup. [3] In April 2015 she moved to Chula Vista, California to train at the national training facility. [3] Farmer was part of the U.S. team that secured a spot in the 2016 Summer Olympics at the 2015 NACRA Sevens Championships. [4] In July 2016, Farmer was chosen for the U.S. Olympic team in Rio de Janeiro. [4] At 6-foot-1, Farmer stands out as a player for her combination of size and speed. [2]

Archbishop Spalding High School is a private, Catholic co-educational high school located in Severn, Maryland, USA. It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore. Most of its students live in Annapolis, Crownsville, Arnold, Pasadena, Severna Park, Crofton, Millersville, Glen Burnie, or Davidsonville in Anne Arundel County. Some also travel from southern Baltimore County, east Prince George's County and parts of Howard County. Spalding has numerous clubs for student involvement and/or academic competition, including Academic Bowl, Mock Trial, Strategic Gaming, HOPE and a NAIMUN award-winning Model United Nations team. It also has many competitive sports teams, such as rugby, soccer, cheerleading, dance, basketball, softball, american football, ice hockey, baseball, lacrosse, track and cross country. These athletic teams compete in the MIAA and the IAAM Conferences. The school sponsors a highly competitive music program, in which students participate in interstate competitions each year. Archbishop Spalding's mascot is the Cavalier.

The United States national rugby sevens team competes in international rugby sevens competitions. The national sevens team is organized by USA Rugby, and the team has been led by Head Coach Mike Friday since 2014.

Angela Tincher O'Brien is an American, former collegiate All-American, retired professional All-Star softball pitcher and coach. She most recently served as the pitching coach at Virginia Tech. She was a 2008 first-round draft selection for the NPF Akron Racers. She is a graduate of James River High School and a 2008 graduate of Virginia Tech. In 2013, she was hired as Virginia Tech's softball pitching coach where she owns numerous school records. She is the ACC career leader in wins, strikeouts, shutouts, innings pitched, strikeout ratio and no-hitters, while also ranking in several records for the NCAA Division I, where she is one of five pitchers to achieve 100 wins, 1,000 strikeouts, an ERA under 1.00 and average double-digit strikeouts for her career.

Kayla Bashore-Smedley is an American field hockey defender and midfielder. Now living in Bloomington, Indiana, she was a student of the Indiana University, where she played for the Hoosiers, and was the first player from that university to make the US National Field Hockey team. She represented the USA at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Lauren Crandall is an American field hockey player. At the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Summer Olympics, she competed for the United States women's national field hockey team in the women's event, serving as team captain in 2012 and 2016. She played for the national team from 2005 through 2016. Before joining the national team she played field hockey for Wake Forest University, winning the NCAA field hockey championship twice.

The men's national basketball team of the United States won the gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They automatically qualified for the Olympics by winning the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2014.
