Carmen S. Menoni is an Argentine-American physicist who is the University Distinguished Professor at Colorado State University. Her research considers oxide materials for interference coatings and spectrometry imaging. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, American Physical Society, Optica, and SPIE. Menoni served as the President of the IEEE Photonics Society from 2020 to 2021.
Menoni is from Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. [1] [2] She became interested in mathematics and physics as a young girl. [1] She studied electrical engineering at the National University of Rosario, where she completed an undergraduate research project with the National Atomic Energy Commission. [1] Inspired by her introduction to materials science, Menoni decided to follow a research career with optical materials. She moved to the United States as a graduate student, where she joined Colorado State University to study structure-property relationships in Germanium and Indium phosphide. [3]
In 1991, Menoni joined the faculty at Colorado State University as a teaching assistant. She led the National Science Foundation centre for Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) Science and Technology with her husband, Jorge Rocca. [4] [5] At Colorado State Menoni investigated the physics of semiconductors and optically active materials. [6] [7] In the 1990s, Menoni established XUV Lasers, a spin-out company that sought to commercialize her innovations in laser science. [8]
Menoni studied multi-layer oxide materials that can act as anti-reflective coatings for high power lasers. In 2008, she developed a table-top microscope that uses extreme ultraviolet lasers and sophisticated lasers to image nanoscale objects. [9] The laser pulse, which had around a nanosecond duration, could image structures with a spatial resolution of ≈ 0.05 μm. [9] This discovery resulted in Menoni winning the R&D Mag 100 Award. [9] The anti-reflection coatings developed by Menoni were used in the LIGO gravitational wave detector. [10] She produces the anti-reflection coatings through ion beam sputtering. [10]
Menoni was promoted to University Distinguished Professor in 2014, and elected President of the IEEE Photonics Society in 2020. [11]
Menoni met her husband, laser physicist Jorge J. Rocca , as an undergraduate student at the National University of Rosario. [21]

Anthony Michael Johnson is an American experimental physicist, a professor of physics, and a professor of computer science and electrical engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He is the director of the Center for Advanced Studies in Photonics Research (CASPR), also situated on campus at UMBC. Since his election to the 2002 term as president of the Optical Society, formerly the Optical Society of America, Johnson has the distinction of being the first and only African-American president to date. Johnson's research interests include the ultrafast photophysics and nonlinear optical properties of bulk, nanostructured, and quantum well semiconductor structures, ultrashort pulse propagation in fibers and high-speed lightwave systems. His research has helped to better understand processes that occur in ultrafast time frames of 1 quadrillionth of a second. Ultrashort pulses of light have been used to address technical and logistical challenges in medicine, telecommunications, homeland security, and have many other applications that enhance contemporary life.

Her research focuses on plasmonic metamaterials, manmade composites of metals that use surface plasmons to achieve optical properties not seen in nature.
Judith M. Dawes is an Australian physicist who is Professor of Physics at Macquarie University. She studies the interactions of light at the nanoscale and the applications of lasers in sensing. She is a former president of the Australian Optical Society, and a Fellow of SPIE and Optica.
Hatice Altug is a Turkish physicist and professor in the Bioengineering Department and head of the Bio-nanophotonic Systems laboratory at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), in Switzerland. Her research focuses on nanophotonics for biosensing and surface enhanced spectroscopy, integration with microfluidics and nanofabrication, to obtain high sensitivity, label-free characterization of biological material. She has developed low-cost biosensor allowing the identification of viruses such as Ebola that can work in difficult settings and therefore particularly useful in case of pandemics.

Shouleh Nikzad is an Iranian-American electronic engineer and research scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She leads the Advanced Detector Arrays, Systems, and Nanoscience Group. Her research considers ultraviolet and low-energy particle detectors, nanostructure devices and novel spectrometers. Nikzad is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the National Academy of Inventors and SPIE.
Sandra Gail Biedron is an American physicist who serves as the Director of Knowledge Transfer for the Center for Bright Beams as well as professor in Electrical & Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at the University of New Mexico, where in 2021 she mentors nine graduate students and two post-doctoral researchers. Her research includes developing, controlling, operating, and using laser and particle accelerator systems. Clara Jody Saraceno is a laser scientist whose research involves the development of ultrafast lasers, a technology whose applications include ultrafast laser spectroscopy, and imaging biological processes at the molecular scale. Born in Argentina and educated in France and Switzerland, she works in Germany as a professor in the Faculty for Electrical Engineering of Ruhr University Bochum, where she holds the Chair of Photonics and Ultrafast Laser Science.
Randy Alan Bartels is an American investigator at the Morgridge Institute for Research and a professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He has been awarded the Adolph Lomb Medal from the Optical Society of America, a National Science Foundation CAREER award, a Sloan Research Fellowship in physics, an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, a Beckman Young Investigator Award, and a Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering (PECASE). In 2020 and 2022, he received support from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to develop microscope technologies for imaging tissues and cells.
Andrea Blanco-Redondo is a Spanish photonics engineer and physicist who works at the University of Central Florida as Florida Photonics Center of Excellence (FPCE) Endowed Professor in the College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL). She is known for her discovery of optical quartic solitons; her research interests also include topological photonics, quantum optics, nanophotonics, photonic crystals, and slow light.
