"Carol of the Bells" is a cover of the popular Christmas carol, Carol of the Bells by the rock singer Hugo Ferreira, the lead singer of the American rock band, Tantric. The single was the debut release under Ferreira's name as a solo artist and not under Tantric. It was released on November 23, 2010, via Breakdown Records. ^{[2] [3]}

Background and recording

While in the studio working on Tantric's fifth studio album 37 Channels upon approaching the holiday season, Ferreira decided to do a cover with a distinctive rock twist to the holiday classic Carol of the Bells. ^{[4] [5]}

Recording the track at his home studio in Louisville, Kentucky known as the "Blue Room," ^[6] Ferreira found that the vocal arrangement naturally carried a darker undertone. He embraced this quality, aiming to create a version that would appeal to rock fans while maintaining the essence of the original composition. “The hardest part about covering a Christmas classic is keeping your rock fans interested by avoiding the typical jolly style while still staying true to the song," Ferreira explained in an December 2010 interview. Further stating "I wanted it to sound like it should be in a Tim Burton movie." ^[7]

Ferreira specifically chose "Carol of the Bells" because of its haunting melody and dramatic tone, which resonated with him. "I've always loved this particular song, especially the vocals," he noted. "I wanted it to be beautiful but dark. It came out like I imagined it." ^{[8] [9] [10]}

In addition to the artistic vision behind the release, Ferreira is using the project to give back. A portion of the proceeds from the song will go toward helping families and children in need, a cause he feels strongly about. One of the benefiting charities is The Gavril Project, an initiative Ferreira helped develop to support families in his home state of Kentucky. "We should always consider people in need around us at all times," he emphasized. ^{[11] [12]}

While promoting this holiday release, Ferreira announced via social media that his main focus will always be his work with Tantric and he was still actively working on the band's next album, but the ever-evolving lineup for instrumental band-members at that time would see him perform a series of solo acoustic shows in December 2010. ^[13]
