Caroline Atkinson (born 1952) is an American economist,politician and former journalist. In 2013,she had been the Deputy Assistant to 44th US president,Barack Obama,and was his Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs. [2]
Caroline Atkinson was born in Washington,D.C.,in 1952,and was raised in London,United Kingdom. Her father was the UK's chief economist at the time. [1]
Atkinson graduated from the University of Oxford with a bachelor's degree in philosophy,politics and economics (PPE). [3] [1]
She began her career as a journalist for The Washington Post , The Economist and the Times of London. [1]
From 1994 to 1996 she worked as a special advisor on financial stability and market regulation at the Bank of England. [4]
She worked on international monetary and financial policy at the United States Treasury Department from 1997 to 2001 and was also an advisor to Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin and Larry Summers. [2] [4]
In the years up to 2003 she worked as a senior partner in the Council on Foreign Relations. [5]
From 2003 to 2005 she was senior director at the investment advisory firm Stonebridge International LLC. [5]
In 2005,she moved to the International Monetary Fund,where she was Director of External Relations from November 1,2008,to July 2011. [5] [3] Before that,Atkinson held various positions,most recently as deputy director for the Western Hemisphere. [3]
Starting in August 2011,Atkinson served as Special Assistant for International Economic Relations in the Obama Administration. During this time she played a central role in the Obama administration's response to the crisis in Europe. She supported the work of the G-8 and G-20 and cited integration efforts as an economic response to the Arab Spring. [2]
On June 21,2013,President Obama appointed Atkinson to be Deputy Assistant and Deputy National Security Advisor for Foreign Trade. She took over these tasks from Michael Froman,who had recently been appointed US trade representative. [5]
In that role,Atkinson represented the Administration at international business summits,including the G-8 and G-20. She coordinated the political processes and implementation in the areas of finance,trade and investment,development,as well as energy and environmental protection. [6]
On March 20,2014,Russia imposed entry bans on Atkinson and 8 other Americans as a countermeasure to the US sanctions in the context of the Russo-Ukrainian War. [7]

Lael Brainard is an American economist who served as the 14th director of the National Economic Council from 2023 to 2025. She previously served as the 22nd vice chair of the Federal Reserve between May 2022 and February 2023. Bobby J. Pittman Jr. is an American economist who served as the Special Assistant to President George W. Bush and Senior Director for African Affairs at White House from 2006 to 2009. In that capacity,he was the lead advisor to National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley and President Bush on Africa issues. He also served as the President's Africa Personal Representative (APR) to the G8. During his tenure,Pittman was part of a White House team which oversaw the design and execution of key initiatives such as the Africa Financial Sector Initiative,President's Malaria Initiative (PMI),President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR),Africa Education Initiative,and Millennium Challenge Account (MCA).

In that position he served as the United States sherpa to the G7,G8,and G20 summits of economic powers. On May 2,2013,President Barack Obama nominated him to succeed Ambassador Ron Kirk as the U.S. Trade Representative. He was confirmed on June 19,2013.

The U.S.–China Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) was a high-level dialogue for the United States and China to discuss a wide range of regional and global strategic and economic issues between both countries. The establishment of the S&ED was announced on April 1,2009,by U.S. President Barack Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao. The upgraded mechanism replaced the former Senior Dialogue and Strategic Economic Dialogue started under the George W. Bush administration. The Summer Palace Dialogue (SPD) is an economic forum which brings together economists from both China and the United States to discuss economic cooperation between the two largest economies in the world. SPD is co-hosted by Chinese Economists 50 Forum and the Columbia Global Centers East Asia,and was formerly co-hosted by the Brookings Institution. It was founded in 2009 by former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and current Chairman of AEA Investors Admiral Bill Owens and Vice Minister Liu He of the Chinese Central Leading Group on Financial and Economic Affairs. The forum extends for two days. Participants spend the first day in private discussions and then convene a half-day public session to summarize their observations,analyses,and conclusions with the press and a broader audience. The Summer Palace Dialogue is scheduled annually in mid-September in Beijing,right before the Summer World Economic Forum in Dalian. The third annual Summer Palace Dialogue was held on September 12–13,2011.
