Cartwheel is the second album by American shoegaze project Hotline TNT, fronted by Will Anderson. It was released on November 3, 2023, through Third Man Records and received acclaim from critics.
The albums lyrics, according to Anderson, focus heavily on his interpersonal relationships. He noted that many were related to romantic relationships, but that others were about his parents, friends, and bandmates. Cartwheel received a score of 80 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic based on eight critics' reviews, indicating "generally favorable" reception. [8] Editors at AnyDecentMusic? scored this release a 7.7 out of 10, based on six reviews. [7] Pitchfork named it "Best New Music", with the site's reviewer Ian Cohen stating that while it "occasionally relents in tempo and density, it's extremely loud at all volumes, a force multiplier for the saddest secrets of its source material", additionally describing it as "towering shoegaze and supersized power-pop anthems". [2] Mojo felt that "though Anderson buries his voice and words in the maelstrom, his declared (if not immediately apparent) theme of a constantly thwarted search for 'true love' seems right at home in shoegazing's characteristic marriage of bliss and anxiety". [12]
Craig Howieson of The Line of Best Fit summarized the album as "12 songs that are soft around the edges and wash over the listener in shades of sunset orange and pink, guitars morph and collapse in on themselves like the contents on a lava lamp". [11] Paste 's Andy Steiner wrote that it "takes all the texture of Nineteen's DIY-budget distortion and softens it without losing any of that growl or edge", calling it "a remarkable act of balance" as well as "not just a triumph for Anderson and Hotline TNT, but for shoegaze itself". [3] Ian Gormely of Exclaim! stated that the tracks "carry many shoegaze and dream pop hallmarks—swirling soundscapes, bendy-guitars—which lends a vibe-dependent aesthetic that keeps the record in line with many of its contemporaries". [10]
Concluding a review for AllMusic, Matt Collar described the album as, "Cartwheel's sampler pack of destroyed guitar tones, powerful songwriting, and wafts of nostalgia for multiple eras of slowcore and shoegaze all contribute to its high replay value and overall captivating sound. The album reshuffles a deck of familiar reference points, but it still deals a hand that's engaging and holds a bothered beauty of its own." [9]
Writing for Pitchfork, Ian Cohen commented that "No matter how far into the red Cartwheel pushes, there's one sound that stands out: Anderson's humble, everydude voice, somehow rising above the clouds of dirt and grime even at a mumble." [13]

Shoegaze is a subgenre of indie and alternative rock characterized by its ethereal mixture of obscured vocals, guitar distortion and effects, feedback, and overwhelming volume. It emerged in Ireland and the United Kingdom in the late 1980s among neo-psychedelic groups who usually stood motionless during live performances in a detached, non-confrontational state. The name comes from the heavy use of effects pedals, as the performers were often looking down at their pedals during concerts.
"Celestica" is a song recorded by the Canadian electronic band Crystal Castles for their second studio album, Crystal Castles (2010). After a BBC Radio 1 premiere, it was released on April 16, 2010, as the first single from the album, being later accompanied by a music video. According to member Ethan Kath, the track was inspired by a suicide at the Celestica factories in Canada. Critics cited the song as a shift from Crystal Castles' usual sound, presenting a pop sound and resembling shoegaze. Others highlighted its melody and member Alice Glass' vocals. It was considered one of the best songs of the year by NME, while Pitchfork named it as one of the best tracks between 2010 and 2014 and among the best Crystal Castles songs.
Deafheaven is an American post-metal band formed in 2010. Originally based in San Francisco, the group began as a two-piece with singer George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy, who recorded and self-released a demo album together. Following its release, Deafheaven recruited three new members and began to tour. Before the end of 2010, the band signed to Deathwish Inc. and later released their debut album Roads to Judah, in April 2011. They popularized a unique style blending black metal, shoegaze, and post-rock, among other influences, later called "blackgaze" by reviewers.
