Castle Rock Springs was a resort Lake County, California built around a group of mineral springs, including one hot spring with relatively high volumes of water.

Former names include Mills Hot Springs, Mills' Mineral Springs, Noble's Springs, Castle Springs, Castle Hot Springs, Verdant Vales, Camp Houdd Gibson and Houdd Gibson Camp. [2] [1]

Location

The Castle Springs are 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Middletown. [3] They are 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Whispering Pines. [2] The springs are high on a mountainside above the hot springs at Anderson Springs, which is 1 mile (1.6 km) to the east and 800 feet (240 m) lower. [4] They are at an elevation of 2,342 feet (714 m). [1] The resort buildings were about 14 mile (0.40 km) from the hot springs on a ridge with a fine view of the Putah Creek valley and mountains to the east. [5]

Springs

As of 1910 basins had been excavated and cemented at two hot springs a few yards apart in a ravine that feeds Putah Creek. The basins had temperatures of 160 and 164 °F (71 and 73 °C) and a combined flow of about 8 US gallons (30 l; 6.7 imp gal) per minute. [6] The water was mildly sulphurated, but otherwise only slightly mineralized. [4]

The Big Hot sulfur spring is in a small canyon above the hotel, and in 1914 delivered about 40,000 US gallons (150,000 l; 33,000 imp gal) of water daily, issuing from the spring at a temperature of 163 °F (73 °C). This water was piped to the bath house and the swimming tank. There was a small hot spring issuing from the bank near the Big Hot spring with a temperature of 153 °F (67 °C). Other springs on the property, with their temperature, were: Sour, 65 °F (18 °C); Black Sulphur, 67 °F (19 °C); White Sulphur, 66 °F (19 °C); Vangas, 66 °F (19 °C). Much hydrogen sulfide escaped from the bank around Vangas. [3]

History

The springs were located about 1885 by W. Mills. They were formerly known as Mills Springs or Noble's Springs. [3] The property was run as a small resort where the hot water was used for bathing and the water of the cool sulfur springs for drinking. In the summer of 1910 the property had recently changed ownership and the resort was being improved. This included construction of a hotel, a bathhouse with a swimming plunge, and a dancing pavilion. Several tent cottages would also provide accommodations. [4]

The Castle Springs post office operated here from 1911 to 1917. [7] [2] As of 1913 the property had been in litigation, but was now owned by Mrs. Campbell-Van Luven, who had stated that it would be reopened for the 1914 season. A fine cement-lined swimming pool 25 by 60 feet (7.6 by 18.3 m) has been built recently The hotel and cottages could accommodate 75 visitors. [3]

The Castle Rock Springs Geothermal Steam Area has a large geothermal resource of steam at high temperature and moderate pressure several thousand feet below the surface. It is adjacent to The Geysers, which has been heavily developed for geothermal generation. [8] An environmental impact report for a project in the area was issued in August 1975. [9] The Camp Verdant Vales school is in the center of the area, and Anderson Springs borders the area to the east. [10] At the time of study tourist resorts that were once operative in the area had closed, although some were now being used by specialized private religious communities. [11]

The geothermal areas of Yellowstone include several geyser basins in Yellowstone National Park as well as other geothermal features such as hot springs, mud pots, and fumaroles. The number of thermal features in Yellowstone is estimated at 10,000. A study that was completed in 2011 found that a total of 1,283 geysers have erupted in Yellowstone, 465 of which are active during an average year. These are distributed among nine geyser basins, with a few geysers found in smaller thermal areas throughout the Park. The number of geysers in each geyser basin are as follows: Upper Geyser Basin (410), Midway Geyser Basin (59), Lower Geyser Basin (283), Norris Geyser Basin (193), West Thumb Geyser Basin (84), Gibbon Geyser Basin (24), Lone Star Geyser Basin (21), Shoshone Geyser Basin (107), Heart Lake Geyser Basin (69), other areas (33). Although famous large geysers like Old Faithful are part of the total, most of Yellowstone's geysers are small, erupting to only a foot or two. The hydrothermal system that supplies the geysers with hot water sits within an ancient active caldera. Many of the thermal features in Yellowstone build up sinter, geyserite, or travertine deposits around and within them.

A spring is a point of exit at which groundwater from an aquifer flows out on top of Earth's crust (pedosphere) and becomes surface water. It is a component of the hydrosphere. Springs have long been important for humans as a source of fresh water, especially in arid regions which have relatively little annual rainfall.

Geothermal heating Use of geothermal energy for heating

Geothermal heating is the direct use of geothermal energy for some heating applications. Humans have taken advantage of geothermal heat this way since the Paleolithic era. Approximately seventy countries made direct use of a total of 270 PJ of geothermal heating in 2004. As of 2007, 28 GW of geothermal heating capacity is installed around the world, satisfying 0.07% of global primary energy consumption. Thermal efficiency is high since no energy conversion is needed, but capacity factors tend to be low since the heat is mostly needed in the winter.

Harbin Hot Springs Retreat in California, United States

Harbin Hot Springs is a non-profit hot spring retreat and workshop center at Harbin Springs in Lake County, Northern California. Named after Matthew Harbin, a pioneer who settled in the Lake County area. It is located about two hours northeast of the San Francisco Bay Area, in the United States. The facility was partially destroyed in the Valley Fire in September 2015, and was temporarily closed. In January 2019 it partially reopened, including the main pools and sauna, and a limited cafeteria service.

Highland Springs is a set of springs which was turned into a resort in the 19th century in Lake County, California. The resort grew to be able to accommodate 200 people, attracted by the curative powers of the mineral waters and the lovely mountain scenery. In the 1920s its popularity waned, the hotel was partly burned, and it passed through various hands before the county claimed eminent domain, bought the property, and flooded it with the Highland Springs Reservoir. The reservoir is surrounded by the Highland Springs Recreation Area, managed by the county.

Howard Springs is set of springs turned into a resort in the 1870s in Lake County, California. The resort catered primarily to people interested in the curative powers of the mineral waters. Guests were accommodated in cabins or tents. At one time it had an official post office. The resort changed hands many times over the years, with various changes to the lodge, accommodations and bathhouses, until closing in 1970. For a period it was leased for geothermal exploration. Today it has reopened as a health resort.

Summer Lake Hot Springs Thermal springs in Oregon

Summer Lake Hot Springs are natural hot springs at the south end of Summer Lake in south-central Oregon. They are artesian mineral springs with four surface sources. The springs have complex water chemistry. The temperature of the main source is approximately 123 °F (51 °C) with a water flow of approximately 20 US gallons (76 L) per minute. Over the years, the site has been developed as a rustic family bathing and relaxation resort. The hot springs are 124 miles (200 km) southeast of Bend, Oregon, near the small town of Paisley, Oregon.
