Centria University of Applied Sciences (former name Central Ostrobothnia University of Applied Sciences ) [1] (Finnish : Centria-ammattikorkeakoulu) is a university of applied sciences (UAS) in Finland.

The name Centria University of Applied Sciences is derived from Central Ostrobothnia University of Applied Sciences and officially used from the start of autumn semester 2012. The UAS has three campuses: Kokkola, [2] Jakobstad [3] and Ylivieska. [4]

Centria offers higher education in five fields: engineering, business, social and health care, humanities and culture. Bachelor's degree programmes in English are offered in the fields of engineering, business and health care. Master's degree programmes are offered in the fields of engineering and business. One in five of Centria's 4 200 degree students comes from outside Finland. [5]

Centria is a multidisciplinary, dynamic and international institution, which offers students and personnel an environment that is innovative, caring and multicultural.

Organisation

Centria University of Applied Sciences is owned by Centria University of Applied Sciences Ltd. The stakeholders are the City of Kokkola, the City of Ylivieska, the Ostrobothnian Chamber of Commerce, the Central Ostrobothnian Entrepreneurs Association, the Federation of Education in Central Ostrobothnia, the Education Federation of the Jokilaakso Region, the City of Jakobstad, the Raudaskylä Christian College Association and the Central Ostrobothnia Conservatory Association. The main shareholder is the City of Kokkola with a 27 percent share. [6]

The university of applied sciences employs 320 people. [7]

Studies at Centria University of Applied Sciences

Centria is multidisciplinary institution located in Western Finland, Northern Europe and offers degree programmes in the fields of:

• Engineering

• Business

• Social and health care

• Culture

• Humanities

The extent of UAS Bachelor's degree studies is generally 210−240 credits (ECTS), which means 3.5–4 years of studies. The entry requirement is a certificate from an upper secondary school or the matriculation certificate, a vocational qualification or corresponding foreign studies. The requirement for Master's studies at a Centria is a Bachelors' level degree and at least two years of relevant work experience gained after the Bachelor's degree. The UAS Master's degree, which is 60–90 credits and usually takes 1–1,5 years, is equivalent to a university Master's degree in the labour market.

At Centria each student has a personal study plan, which facilitates student guidance and the monitoring of progress in studies. Students apply for studies in the national joint application or during a separate application. The UAS determines the admission criteria and arranges student selection and entrance examination at their discretion. Centria UAS also arranges adult education and open education geared to maintain and upgrade competencies. [8]

Centria RDI (Research, Development and Innovation)

Centria participates annually in about 100 R&D projects of which one fifth are international. The RDI activities employ 113 people. [8]

Lapland University of Applied Sciences, in short Lapland UAS, is a Finnish polyethnic university located in the cities of Kemi, Tornio and Rovaniemi. It was founded on January 1, 2014 as a merger between Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences and Kemi-Tornio University of Applied Sciences. The merger carried over all the features of the previous organizations in an expanded organization form.

South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences is a University of Applied Sciences in Finland. It was established in the beginning of 2017, when Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences (Kyamk) and Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences (Mamk) merged. Xamk is the 4th largest university of applied sciences in Finland with 11 458 students and 897 staff members across four campuses. Xamk is jointly owned by the cities of Mikkeli, Kotka, Savonlinna and Kouvola with Mikkeli holding a majority stake (52%) since August 2019.
