Chad La Tourette (born October 7, 1988 in Livermore, California) is an American former distance swimmer. La Tourette is a six-time medalist (three golds, three silvers) at the World University Games and two-time silver medalist at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships.

Career

At the 2010 National Championships, La Tourette competed in the 400 and 1500 m freestyle. In the 400 m freestyle, La Tourette finished in 4th place. [1] In the 1500 m freestyle, La Tourette handily won with a time of 14:55.39 with his closest competitor eight seconds back. [2]

At the 2010 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, La Tourette won two silver medals behind Canadian swimmer Ryan Cochrane. In the 1500 m freestyle, La Tourette finished with a time of 14:54.48, five seconds behind the eventual winner Cochrane. [3] In the 800 m freestyle, held three days after the 1500 m freestyle, La Tourette finished with a time of 7:51.62. [4] La Tourette said he was not disappointed with his performances but only regretted not staying with Cochrane more. [5]

At the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai, La Tourette competed in two events, the 800 and 1500 m freestyle. In his first event, the 800 m freestyle, La Tourette finished in 6th place with a time of 7:46.52. [6] In the 1500 m freestyle, La Tourette finished in 5th place with a time of 14:52.36. [7]

At the 2012 United States Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, La Tourette just missed making the Olympic team by placing third in the 1500 m freestyle with a time of 14:57.53.

Ryan Andrew Cochrane is a retired Canadian competitive swimmer who specialised in freestyle distance events. Cochrane is an Olympic silver and bronze medallist as well as a triple gold medallist from the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. He is also a four-time Commonwealth Games champion in the 400-metre and 1,500-metre having won both medals in 2010 and 2014. He holds six world championship medals from the 800-metre and 1500-metre, this also makes Cochrane Canada's all-time leading medallist for a swimmer at the World Aquatics Championships. Cochrane also won gold medals in the 400 and 1,500 m freestyle at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, as well as a bronze in the 4 x 200 m freestyle at the 2015 Games. From the year 2008 - 2015, Cochrane was named the Canadian male swimmer of the year - winning the award 8 times in a row.

The American team competed at the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai, China from July 16 to July 31. The United States topped the gold medal count in the competition with 17 golds and finished the competition with 32 total medals, behind China's 36. 16 of the 17 gold medals came from the swimming competition and one came from the open water swimming competition. Individually, Michael Phelps won the most overall medals in the competition with seven. Ryan Lochte won the most gold medals among the male competitors with five and finished the competition with six medals total.
