Chakr Innovation is a cleantech startup based in India specializing in material science technology. The company was founded by graduates from IIT Delhi and works in the field of air and environmental protection. [1] Chakr Innovation is the first company in India to receive type approval certification for their retrofit emission control device (RECD) from labs approved by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). [2] They have over 15 patents filed and their work has been recognized across the globe by reputed organizations like the United Nations, WWF, Forbes, and the like. [3] [4] [5]
Chakr Innovation was founded by Kushagra Srivastava, Arpit Dhupar and Bharti Singhla, graduates from IIT Delhi in 2016 to reduce pollution with the help of innovation and technology. [6] The idea began with a group of friends having sugarcane juice at a shop with a wall turned black because of soot particles coming out from the diesel generator exhaust used for crushing sugarcane. [7]
Chakr Innovation launched Chakr Shield in 2017, one year after its incorporation. The device could reduce the particulate matter 2.5 (PM 2.5) emission from a diesel generator by up to 90%. In 2022 the company introduced a Dual Fuel Kit that would allow a diesel generator to run on fossil fuel and natural gas simultaneously in a 30 to 70 ratio. [8] [9]
Chakr Shield is a patented retrofit emission control device (RECD) by Chakr Innovation, it was also the first in India to get a Type Approval certification by CPCB certified labs like ICAT and ARAI for its capability to reduce the pollution by diesel generators by up to 90%. [1] [10]
The Chakr Dual Fuel Kit uses technology to allow a diesel generator set to operate on a mixture of gas and diesel as a fuel, with 70% natural gas and 30% fossil fuel. [11] This can be a perfect conversion kit for industries with access to gas pipeline networks. With the launch of this product, Chakr Innovation reportedly became the only turnkey solution provider in India to control the emissions from diesel generators. [12] [13] [14]
In 2020, Chakr Innovation launched a decontamination cabinet for N95 masks with the help of ozone gas. Ozone is a strong oxidizing agent that destroyed viruses and bacteria by diffusing through their protein coats. Chakr DeCoV reportedly inactivated SARS-CoV-2 and reduced bacterial load by 99.9999%, allowing N95 masks to be reused up to 10 times. [15] [16] [17]

Bi-fuel vehicles are vehicles with multifuel engines capable of running on two fuels. The two fuels are stored in separate tanks and the engine runs on one fuel at a time. On internal combustion engines, a bi-fuel engine typically burns gasoline and a volatile alternate fuel such as natural gas (CNG), LPG, or hydrogen. Bi-fuel vehicles switch between gasoline and the other fuel, manually or automatically. A related concept is the dual-fuel vehicle which must burn both fuels in combination. Air pollution in India is a serious environmental issue. Of the 30 most polluted cities in the world, 21 were in India in 2019. As per a study based on 2016 data, at least 140 million people in India breathe air that is 10 times or more over the WHO safe limit and 13 of the world's 20 cities with the highest annual levels of air pollution are in India. 51% of the pollution is caused by industrial pollution, 27% by vehicles, 17% by crop burning and 5% by other sources. In autumn and spring months, large scale crop residue burning in agriculture fields – a cheaper alternative to mechanical tilling – is a major source of smoke, smog and particulate pollution. India has a low per capita emissions of greenhouse gases but the country as a whole is the third largest greenhouse gas producer after China and the United States. A 2013 study on non-smokers has found that Indians have 30% weaker lung function than Europeans.
The air quality in Delhi, the capital territory of India, according to a WHO survey of 1,650 world cities, and a survey of 7,000 world cities by the US-based Health Effects Institute in August 2022, is the worst of any major city in the world. It also affects the districts around Delhi. Air pollution in India is estimated to kill about 2 million people every year; it is the fifth largest killer in India. The Indian Government is undertaking several initiatives to upgrade its aging railway infrastructure and enhance its quality of service. AgniKul Cosmos Private Limited is an Indian aerospace manufacturer based in National Centre for Combustion R&D (NCCRD) of IIT Madras, Chennai. The start up aims to develop and launch its own small-lift launch vehicle such as the Agnibaan, capable of placing 100 kg (220 lb) payload into a 700 km (430 mi) orbit. The first commercial launch was expected in 2022. However, no launch happened in that year. The first suborbital mission will be conducted on 22 March 2024. This did not happen either. The company tried twice to launch its suborbital rocket in March and April but postponed due to technical issues.
